Brad Pitt was going to have two movies coming out in the early fall...but no longer. Alejandro Gonzales Innaritu 's Babel (Paramount Vantage, 10.6) is the keeper and Andrew Dominik's The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (Warner Bros., 9.15) is not. Warner Bros. publicity confirmed today that they're delaying Jesse James's release until early 2007. This is being done, I've been told, "due to Brad Pitt's shooting schedule for Oceans 13." What...he's going to be too busy making an ensemble film with 12 other guys to find time to do publicity for a couple of weekends? Sure thing. I can guess what's actually happening, but when I get something solid I'll pass it along. If any industry readers can fill me in (anonymously, of course), the usual confidences apply.

Two Brad Pitt movies in the same year? I think Warners is hoping it'll be another one-two punch at the box office like Seven and Twelve Monkeys in '95. But even with Pitt, I can't imagine a movie about Jesse James doing more than the box office for Young Guns, especially since this one looks to be R-rated too, based on the subject matter. And I hope they're not going to jack up the budget from $20 million to $100 million, cus of Brad's paycheck.

I also don't see the point of an Ocean's 13 if Roberts isn't in it. I'm not a fan of hers, but I recognize her box office appeal, and she's clearly worth half of the gross of the last two installments.

On Ocean´s 13...do you really think Roberts was the true hook for audiences on the previous two movies? For me, the first one seemed attractive because it was so obvious the cast was having such a fun time, it HAD to turn out at least that: a good fun. It didn´t - specially the crappy ending. The second installment got me because, come on, they missed it in the previous, it has to happen now...and it didn´t. Roberts was the last on my mind. And it still is - but with or without her, it has absolutelly no appeal to me anymore (except giving those guys some money to make really good movies, as clooney/soderbergh have been doing)

Maybe Brad Pitt doesn't want to cancel out his chances at an Oscar nod for Babel since that's where the major buzz.

If WB is releasing Jesse James in "early 2007" instead of Fall oscar season, it's either A) a piece of shit, or B) too idiosyncratic and/or challenging to win oscars and find an audience, and whatever the case it will thus receive release in dumping season.

I doubt that it has to do with Pitt wanting Oscar attention, since James is no doubt a lead and Babel looks likely for supporting considering the ensemble cast.

Perhaps the film will have a limited release for Oscar consideration for a week at the end of December and then have a wide release in January or February, kind of like The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada. Hopefully, with more luck.

The con in third film will be getting people to pay to see it.

Warner Bros...Must thinks they have an Oscar winner in AJJCRF and is placing it in contention for 2007 Oscar race. I think that's a smart move, since Babel is so looking like an Oscar contender and they have the head start.

They must not have that many movies in the pipeline that can be Oscar worthy in 2007 and are making a stake now. It's a good move for them.

Almir: Roberts brings in more women than Pitt.

As for Jesse James's release next year, it's probably insurance if Superman Returns hurts their stock as much as Poseidon. They're hoping they can off-set a weak '06 with two Pitt movies and the next Harry Potter for '07.

This stinks. 'The Assasination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford' was probably my most-anticipated film of 2006. Brad Pitt has the best taste in projects of any A-list actor, hands down, and I'm on a huge Western kick in the past year or so. 'Babel' looks great too but I'm more into the Western...it seems lame if this movie comes out in the spring, but then again September even seemed a little lame. It's like if you want something to get Oscar attention it's gotta be November or later. And I don't want to wait a whole extra year for it...annway I don't think it's a particularly commercial movie...

Brad has been in the news so much it may be best for him to promote only one movie before people get tired of seeing him.(Like the problem his X wife is having now)So that movie should be Babel. Since next year Brad will have out Benjamin Button and Oceans 13, the only place to put Jessie James is early in the year. I frankly can't wait to see it. From the script review it seems dark and edgy - much like Fight Club.

If the studio thinks Assassination etc. is a real Oscar contender, why early 2007? The anonymous poster from 2:20 PM got it right -- the first quarter is a dumping ground for movies the studio has no faith in or movies they just don't know how to market. Sometimes the strategy works (The Pink Panther wouldn't have done nearly as well in a more competitive summer '05 slot), but if you don't release a movie in Q1 if you want the Academy to remember it. And expecting Andrew Dominik to deliver somthing that'll sweep the staid Academy members off their feet is a pretty big leap of faith -- he's only got one other feature under his belt and it was a good one, but I can't imagine going from something like Chopper to immediate Oscar gold.

I believe that it is neither an issue of Oscar recognision or that the film is weak. It is possible that scheduling is the problem. Brad Pitt has O13 and Benjamin Button to film this year, as well as find the time to promote Babel. The AOJJBTCRF looks and feels great from the clips we have been shown, but if I had to make the decision between that and Babel, am glad that Babel has been left as is. Am very excited about this film, Innaritu is a fantastic director and it seems that Brad Pitt did a fantastic job in this. Another facet to Pitt's talent.

Promoting ONLY takes a couple of days? Hahaha. You mean a couple of WEEKS at least, surely!!!

The first couple of posters re: O11 and O12, what films were you watching. I can't wait to see O13. But I will miss Julia, her character offset the boys nicely.
