An amusing, well-written, for-some-reason very believable (as far as this stuff goes) AICN review of The Break-Up from "Masswyrm". I believe it because the guy knows how to write, because he has a straight-arrow tone of voice, and because he says he's married (and sounds married). The Break-Up tracking may be upticking (I'm now hearing opening weekend may hit the high 20s) but between this guy's review and Brian Lowry's in Variety, this film looks effin' doomed with the just-make-me-laugh crowd. And maybe, just maybe something that maladjusted hombres like myself might find a way to get into. I love these two portions: (a) "I just can't get over the fact that this film is being released in the summer. It's not a summer film. This is a fall release, something for the cinephiles to wash the taste of summer blockbusters from their palate. Closer in tone to The Good Girl, War of the Roses and the last half of Chasing Amy, this film is anything but heart-warming" and (b) "First, the good news. The Break-Up is a fantastic film of wonderful clarity, depth, insight and honest to god character driven comedy. The bad news? You're probably gonna hate it. No, seriously. A lot of people are gonna hate the living shit out of this movie." The more I hear stuff like this, the more I start to think I might enjoy it, or at least admire it. Maybe.

"Masswyrm" also posted an interesting review of "An Inconvenient Truth" yesterday. He claims to be a conservative Republican and still defends the film, insisting that conservatives -- as well as liberals -- need to see it.

Here's my prediction on this one:
Weekend 1 - 28 million
Donestic total - 125 million
I think this one has a better chance of legs than just about any other comedy opening this season. This trailer is the antithesis of the Miami Vice trailer in terms of aud reaction...Both times Ive seen it in theaters, it had the crowds howling. One crowd even applauded at the John Michael Higgins 'Owner of a Lonely Heart' rendition...
I think Vaughn's gold and I think, regardless of tracking, that this one will stick.

Problem is, the trailer people are applauding bears almost no resemblance to the movie itself (from what I've read). So don't expect word-of-mouth to be very good from those people.
I agree with Jeff... these reviews are getting me more excited about the film.

Another AICN writer worth reading is "Moriarty", his combination of fanboy excitement and perceptive, refreshingly low on hyperbole film criticism is refreshing. His personal blog, Moriarty's DVD Shelf, is even better.

The Break-Up sounds like this summer's Cable Guy! Dark, likely to have fans in certain dark corners.

Of course the trailer is geared by the marketing guys to sell, but killed any interest I had in seeing the feature. Reading a review that says it's engaging and not cliche has piqued my interest...if it's as described by this "wyrm" fellow--on the scale of relationship-disaster flicks--it could be Annie Hall-esque, if it's good it'll be previously mentioned 'War of the Roses', otherwise it'll wind up being 'The Story of Us,' or worse, 'The Mexican'.

Is it just me or does the poster remind you of Ingmar Bergman's "Scenes from a Marriage" that this may be a comedic version of?

There is a blurb from your friend Paul Hammond in some publication that seems to be glowing. Any word of mouth from him?

I am a Vince Vaughn fan, but I hated this movie. It wasn't a terrible movie, but it was a big disappointment.
Vince will be Vince...a loud, semi-unlikeable, wise-cracking, smooth-talking, motor-mouth. He plays the ass. It was Jennifer Aniston's job to sell Vince to the audience. We need to see what she loves in him or why she puts up with him or why she wants him back. And Aniston wasn't good enough, likeable enough, talented enough, or magnetic enough to win us over. Jennifer needed to leap off the screen and make us feel something...for her, for Vince, for the movie, for the characters, for anything.
The bottom line: Jennifer Aniston failed this movie!
If anyone saw the movie "Prime", I would describe "The Break-up" as a lesser Prime or Prime-lite.

What? It's like...Prime??
Oh, wait. I was thinking of *Primer*.
It would be fucking AWESOME if this movie was like Primer.
I actually do kind of want to see it after the AICN review.

The comparison of Prime to The Break-up had to do with:
1) the ending
2) no chemistry between the stars
3) cliches abound
4) disappointing but not a disaster

Everyone likes Vince when he's riffing and I don't think Jennifer is a worthy riffing opponent. EW's "C" review of the movie mentions that one of the better scenes in the movie is between Vaughn and Favreau... two kings of the comic riff.

Massawyrm, aka Cargill, is one of the local guys in town who work a crap video store job by day yet have connections to Harry Knowles, Korey Coleman, and other infamous Austinites. He used to appear weekly on Korey's "Reel Deal" show on public access. He's half asshole, half genuinely intelligent with some amusing opinions on movies, way too prone to intensely hate or worship a film with little middle ground. I always find his written reviews to be among the best on Harry's shitty site, however, since he has a decent grasp of grammar and sentence structure. Dude never met a romantic comedy he didn't get wood over, though...

Jeffrey,
There are a million mooks in the world who can assemble a better film review than this "Massawyrm." This day laborer has proven himself top chump on the AICN scene after joining late last year. He's obnoxious, and clearly writes to provoke instead of inform - just all the other boobies AICN employs. If you believe that's "straight-arrow" writing...well, you've just rained on my parade.
Tis a shame that you felt the need to promote his embargo-breakin' ass to the masses. And here I was ready to celebrate his eventual creep into AICN obscurity. You've killed that party.

James:
Ok, so I saw the clips at http://www.themoviebox.net/movies/2006/0-9ABC/Break-Up,The/trailer.php and he does come off pushy and insensitive when they're together. And then he acts like a stalker when it's over. At least it's a step-up for Joey Lauren Adams. She gets confused for Zellwegger because of the accent, but Adams is more talented. Yeah, the supporting actors are the ones who steal the show. OTOH, it just seems like they're recycling scenes from 40 Year Old Virgin...

I just came back from the screening at the Mann's Chinese, and I gotta tell you, it's not half bad. It's quite genuine and pretty damn painful at times. It's offset by a great Vaughn obnoxious asshole performance (along with good supporting characters, including Jon Favreau in the normally reserved for Vaughn role). It's a good type of humor, the acting is pretty top notch all around, even Aniston. The final ending definitely feels a little weird and tacked on, but overall it's a film I think Jeff would admire, if not actually enjoy.
