Richard Linklater's Fast Food Nation, which screened at the Cannes Film festival yesterday afternoon at 5 pm, is Traffic with meat. Based on Eric Schlosser 's best-selling nonfiction "Fast Food Nation", it's a sprawlingly ambitious ensemble drama (i.e., meaning it's not a documentary) about how different people at different economic stratas are coping with or reacting to the gastronomic yuck factor at the core of the fast-food industry . If Super-Size Me put you off McDonald's, wait until you see this puppy. Yet another in a fascinating run of political films that are suddenly pouring out of Hollywood these days, Fast Food Nation isn't without flaws. It meanders a bit and isn't exactly strung tight with story tension, but it's an agreeable meandering. I was so "with" this film and what Linklater was up to in his rambling-shambling way that I forgave the frilm for its occasional detours that don't quite pay off. Others have been telling me they think FFN has too many loose story strands, others feel as I do, and still others are creaming over it. N.Y. Times critic Manohla Dargis is calling it "devastating" and "ferocious" and "the most essential political film from an American director since Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11." (Manohla showed up for the early afternoon Fast Food Nation press conference today, and she rarely attends press conferences, so there you go.) A woman I know just walked in and said some people didn't like it "because of all the blood." That's the single dumbest thing I've heard so far from anyone at this festival. The slaughterhouse killing-floor sequence comes only at the end, and is obviously justified, necessary and non-gratuitous. Some of the characters feel under-written, but restrained, lived-in performances are given uniformly by Gregg Kinnear, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Bruce Willis, Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette, Paul Dano, Esai Morales, Wilmer Valderrama, Kris Kristofferson, Ashley Johnson, Lou Pucci, Jr., Luis Guzman, Avril Lavigne, Ana Claudia Talancon and Bobby Cannavale.

I saw Georges Franju's Blood of the Beasts in a film class 7 years ago and I haven't eaten meat since. Not even once. If the cow slaughter scene in Fast Food Nation really is semi-brutal, maybe this movie will have the same effect on some other people. Roger Ebert has already said it's having this effect on him:

http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060518/FILMFESTIVALS01/60518003

Anyway, as the ultimate gruesome slaughterhouse movie, I'm sure Blood of the Beasts was on Linklater's mind.

So who is the market for such films? Vegetarians? I understand that the process of meat processing is rather disgusting but when wasn't it? Since the dawn of man, animals have been slaughtered for consumption. How does that have anything to do with fast food? McDonald's has tried to market a 'veggie' burger with little or no success. Humans regardless of ethnicity, nationality or political standing are by and large omnivores. That's just the way we're wired.

I'm really glad to hear the good buzz so far on Fast Food Nation. And as for it having "loose strands" and meandering a bit, well, it is a Richard Linklater film, right?

The last time that Linklater had a disappointing studio film -- The Newton Boys -- he responded with 2 great films in the same year, Tape and the rotoscoped Waking Life. Now, coming off his second disappointing studio film -- The Bad New Bears -- it looks like he'll have similar success this year with FFN and the rotoscoped A Scanner Darkly.

It will be very interesting to see how FFN is received here. I know that my wife and I used to eat fast food a ton, and then after reading Schlosser's book, we stopped completely.

Matt, if the movie is like the book, the point isn't that we should all be vegetarians. The point is that you do not want to eat meat at a fast food place. But that's also just a part of a book. The overriding point is how much fast food places have influenced our society from issues ranging from minimum wage to urban sprawl. I wonder how much of that will be in the movie, though.

What's the difference between eating meat at a fast food place and buying it from a local butcher and cooking it myself? The animal is still getting slaughtered somewhere in there. Eating fast food is a personal choice. Just because there is a McDonald's on every corner doesn't mean you have to eat there. If you want to argue minimum wage then fast food isn't it. By and large fast food jobs are taken up by teenagers and the un-educated (aside from managers). I haven't heard a good arguement for why a teenager (who already have too much disposable income) deserves to make $12 an hour. Same goes for the person who decided to drop out of high school.

...on a final note regarding fast food: The bottom line is that the people who argue for the 'living wage' have clearly never owned or operated a small business. Not that fast food is a "small" business anymore. The corporations have basically killed the Mom & Pops.

"the most essential political film from an American director since Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11."

The problem with F 9/11 was it didn't focus as much on Bush's destructive domestic policies as it did his short-sighted defense policies, and the public didn't care. People knew he was awful, but they didn't personally feel affected by him, because Moore didn't go for that angle, even though it's what made Bowling for Columbine so effective. And judging by that Ebert summary someone else posted, Fast Food Nation seems to be presented in a way in which the customers aren't part of the equation, so it'll have less impact than critics might think. Indie films in general tend to be out of touch with reality, because they're written and produced by failed studio execs still trying to keep their feet wedged in the door.

JD+Eric: People have been seeing animal brutality in films like Faces of Death for years. If that doesn't change them, Fast Food Nation won't, either.

Colin: Scanner Darkly has niche appeal, even with Keanu and Winona.

I think Matt is missing the point which is totally understandable because he hasn't read the book (or I assume as much). Minimum wage is just a small part of what Eric Schlosser investigates with his great book. I read it because I wanted to understand our food source and where all the piles of frozen food come from, how fast food and idustry supply chain work in agribusiness.

This book doesn't provide you an MBA (far from it), but it sensitizes you to what is going on in the corners of industry that we choose to avoid. Cows, chickens and pigs are raised in ways that simply do not provide them a humane life. I'm not a pacchouli stinking hippy or knee jerk liberal, but when you read this stuff, it's hard not to be affected. Moreover, the chemicals, preservatives, smells, hormones, etc. that are introduced into the food sources are hostile if not toxic. If you haven't noticed, this country has a major weitght problem and this is part of the reason.

If think we can agree that our food should be safe, nutritious and, yes, humane. That's it.

Regarding costs of college: I don't disagree. The costs of higher education are rather rediculous but that's what community colleges are for. Regardless if you're working 40+ hours a week at McDonalds to pay for tuition then you might as well go to Hamburger U. and become a full-fledged manager with benefits.

Regarding Matthew's comment, "What's the difference between eating meat at a fast food place and buying it from a local butcher and cooking it myself?" - there's a h-u-g-e difference between the two!

Meat in fast food restaurants comes from factory farms. If you don't know what a factory farm is, check out Sustainable Table at www.sustainabletable.org. Or, for an even simpler explanation, watch the online flash movie, The Meatrix, at www.themeatrix.com and www.themeatrix2.com.

Meat from factory farms is pumped with hormones, laced with antibtiotics, is from animals who were fed heavy doses of grain (they can't digest it properly) and other unsavory byproducts like chicken litter. Yes! Cows are fed chicken poop.

Sustainable farms don't do stuff like this - truly sustainable meat is pasture raised - where animals are raised in their natural conditions, where they graze and carry out their natural behaviors. They're not shoved into pens and locked indoors on slatted floors to suffer their entire lives.

Eat meat - but eat the right kind of meat! You can find where to get sustainable meat at www.eatwellguide.org - the Eat Well Guide.

Sorry - hope I don't sound like an advertisement - I get a bit passionate about this.
