Susan Wloszczyna's USA Today story about movie phenome- nons winks at (but doesn't fully acknowledge) the all-but-certain fact that Snakes on a Plane is not the next phenomenon, but is, in fact, a pheno- menon already. In the meantime, we get a bunch of half-assed definitions, recollections, and a big chart going all the way back to Porky's. (I just tried to remember how to spell Wloszczyna's name without looking it up, and I blew it again. It's the most impossible-to-remember last name in the history of impossible-to-remember last names. I don't even know how to pronounce it. Is it supposed to sound like "Vlossinya"?)

The Internet has really played into the hands of the producers of SotP like manna from heaven. That said the movie still has to be good to have any legs other than it's opening weekend. I remember when Blair Witch lit up the internet and grossed over 200 mil in this country due to the internet but in reality it was an awful, boring amateurly made film. But it did gross like nobodys bizness. But at the same time I think the public learned a lesson about internet buzz. Now the movie has to deliver on it's promise. Now Samuel Jackson stars and that is a good thing. The title is a hoot. But let's not lose sight here. Is the picture fun and entertaining? Well unless early screenings bomb then the producers will be very very happy with their opening weekend booty. Every Summer has a werid break-out hit. I guess it's either this one or Nacho Libre. I also want to mention that I am shocked at how low grossing Hard Candy is doing. That was a tight, suspenseful film and it's generated alot of buzz but has not performed well at all. Is it going to go wide? Or willit find it's life and profits on DVD?
