The Rotten Tomatoes' positives for Poseidon are in the same range as President Bush's approval rating -- 31%. The creme de la creme rating is 27%. Everyone just hates it, hates it, hates it...and it's really not that bad. I mean, providing you don't go looking for some multi-tiered, character- driven Ship of Fools. It's fast, it's fairly thrilling at times (that seriously claustrophobic crawling-through-the-air-duct scene is a near-classic), the effects are above-average (okay, the rogue wave looks more than a little fake), and thank God it doesn't try to acquaint you with, much less try to make you care about, the characters. And Josh Lucas, who used to play nothing but scumbags, plays a hard-charging hero and likable good guy here. And praise God again that there's no fat Shelly Winters character in this thing.

Every one is entitled to ther opinion but to blow off the fact that Poseidon has no character development as no big deal is crazy. If you had $150 million would you produce this film with that mentality. The 72 version is one of the great pieces of movie pop culture ever released. People lined up around the block and paid to see it 5 to 10 times. It cost $5 million and grossed $90 million here in the U.S alone! That's a fact! Why? Because the premise was cool and it had characters that connected strongly to the moviegoer. Hackmans soul searching preacher tapped into the phycology of the audience at the time. When he tells the other older priest before his desent up the christmas tree that's he's not going to give up, the audience is with him for the rest of the film. There's nothing comprable in this version. Plus when Hackman sacrifices his life toward the films climax there hasn't been a moment like it in the history of mass popcorn movies.
I respect your opinion but your not thinking this one through. Nobody wants to pay to see Poseidon because it's nothing but some great effects. They want to see the effects attached to a story with character's like Hackman, Winters and Borgine that make the experience somthing special that will last with them forever like great movies do. Unfortunetly this is something you will forget the minute you walk out of the theater. WB dropped the ball big time hear and there's no excuse you can't greenlight this type of production without a good script and that's what they did. Titanic grossed $600 milloion her beacuse it connected with people on a real level how could WB not follow that formula! Heads will roll on this one!
P.S There's gotta to be at least 45 minutes of good footage on the cutting room floor they can put back in for the DVD release. I just can't believe Director Peterson had control of this project at the very end. Eventually we will see.

Went back Sat night to see Poseidon again simply because the original is my all time favorite film
and was dissapointed when I seen this new version thursday. While 68% of the reviews are negative on Rotten tomatoes.com the other 32% of critics that give it a positive review really seem to like it and I was intriqued as to why! Upon my 2nd viewing I sort of understand. If taken as a straight foward action picture which the positive nods do Poseidon is pretty exciting. I was let down the 1st time because I kept comparing it frame by frame to the original which is always a problem with remakes plus I was perplexed as to why there was so little character build up. Bottom line is Poseidon is not trying to be a human drama with strong character development like the 72 version. All it wants to be is a condensed adrenline rush that makes for a exciting time at the movies.
It's amazing the way some films play on 2nd viewings, especially these highly hyped summer movies.
Now do I think WB would have been better off taking more time to develop characters in it's intial set up before the wave hits the ship? Yes no doubt about it, Simply because it would have gained greater critical acceptance and gotten more repeat viewings and would most likely have a stronger boxoffice showing. This decision alone will cost the studio at least $150 million world wide boxoffice. Overall the screenplay is marginal at best but Wolfgang Peterson does a solid job directing the action, the cast is good and the film has to be taken for what it is not for what it isn't. Although I still stick to my original view that if the studio copied the titanic blueprint of longer setup and better drawn characters they would have a major hit on there hands and not a divided audience reaction and lukewarm boxoffice returns.
Just needed to get that out of my system.
