Looks like 1.85:1 to me. Remember your TV will overscan the edges so, once this is on a TV it might look more like 1.66:1. In fact, imdb lists the correct ratio as 1.75:1 with a negative ratio 1.96:1. It's possible that this still is 1.96:1 and, with the overscan of your TV, it will come out at the correct 1.75:1. Anyway, I can't think of any VistaVision movies that have been transferred to DVD at 1.66:1. After all, it's VISTA-vision. 1.66:1 isn't much of a vista. Also, I'm pretty sure the previous Searchers disc was 1.85:1. As far as I know, few North American theatres ever projected films in the 1.66:1 ratio, even when Kubrick intended that ratio -- and he used to send his henchmen to check the theatres -- so I doubt this was supposed to be 1.66:1.

It measures 1.78:1, and it's the most stunningly gorgeous transfer to come out in 2006, so far, at least.

There was a Laserdisc version that came out in 1998 that supposedly was in 1:85 ratio, but I never saw it. Has anyone?

I have the SEARCHERS laserdisc. It's absolutely gorgeous, but it's cropped a bit too tightly: closer to 2:1 than 1.85:1, if memory serves.
