Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

Bielinsky is gone

A moment of mourning for Fabiane Bielinsky, the 47 year-old Argentine director of Nine Queens and The Aura, who died today in Sao Paolo, reportedly while working on a TV commercial. We were friendly acquaintances. We first met in Toronto in September 2000 during a Nine Queens interview, and we kept in touch from time to time, exchanging information on this and that. When I travelled to Buenos Aires in early '05 Bielinsky recommended a good steak restaurant in Old Town, and it turned out to be superb. I called screewnriter Guillermo Ariagga (Babel, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada) about this, and he wrote back the following: "I can tell you that Fabiane was a very gentle, talented and generous man. I had very few chances to be with him, but I always said that he was a man I liked a lot: humble, modest and very friendly. And a great director and writer." God rest his soul.

Yes, I'm shocked too. I saw "The Aura" last week or so, and while the movie has some flaws, I can't help recognizing the great talent of Bielinsky. "Nine queens", however, remains one of my favourite movies of all time. My blessings for the people who knew him.

NINE QUEENS is one of those films I try to get people who say they don't like "foreign" films to watch. One of those great "discoveries" you make on you own for me - had heard nothing about it and had gone to Blockbuster out of desperation (my usual place was too far).

It's a shame they had to remake it so poorly (I won't even name the remake out of respect). I have been waiting to see what Bielinsky would do next, not having heard about THE AURA.

I sincerly feel a loss here.

This is very sad news, indeed. I had just discovered Nine Queens and El Aura in the past month. He was truly a special director, one that seemed on the path to greatness.

This is devastating news. I've only seen Nine Queens (and heard good things about The Aura), but Bielinsky looked to me to be building a strong career. This is a terrible blow to Argentinian cinema.

As a philatelist, "NQ" has a special place in my heart (it's the second best stamp-collecting movie that I can think of). Very sad news indeed.

I live in the city where he died. I saw "Nine Queens" and it's a good movie: smart, funny and intelligent. It's a pitty because he is a new talent from South America and it was working with Walter Salles to develop our cinema industry. Argentina also lost the game against Germany in the World Cup. Terrible news for soccer lovers and cinema lovers.

Really too bad. Loved NINE QUEENS. And only 47...

And you just knew someone was going to do an American remake. And you also knew they shouldn't have bothered, as it was utterly pointless (CRIMINAL).

RIP Fabiane
