IMAX Superman

See it in IMAX...that's the all of it. The last feature shown in IMAX that really played with legs was Robert Zemeckis and Tom Hanks' The Polar Express.

Having the benefit of having an IMAX theatre in the town I recently moved to, I don't understand why all multiplexes aren't at least putting one IMAX screen up in their business. The movie going experience definitely is improved and makes even mediocre films like Posiedon fun to see.

Wow - so even a movie about word puzzles is THAT much better in IMAX, huh? Who would have thunk it...?

Only thing, is WORD PLAY: THE IMAX EXPERIENCE going to be released the same day as the regular version or will we have to wait for it?

(in other words, be careful of what you post with too little information, it can have some humorous consequences)

I think all films play better 'big'. The only limitation being the resolution of the media. Unfortunately the modern film going public are limiting their movie theater experiences to the tent-pole pictures and waiting for DVD with the smaller films. I got peeved at listening to Soderberg diss the theater experience when he was hyping Bubble; a film that nobody wanted to see period. Not to rant on Soderberg too much but the dude has gone down hill. He comes off like an asshole nowadays with his viewpoints (don't believe me, listen to his interview on that Amazon podcast). Not to mention his films since Traffic are pretty weak.

Regarding IMAX; I agree that any new theater being built today should have one. In fact I'm all in favor of limiting screens and making them larger. If that means Cars is only playing on two screens instead of five and it's sold out all of opening week then good. It makes the business less front loaded and more old school when a movie would stick around the theaters for 8-10 weeks vs. the typical 4 week turn-around nowadays.

"My Dinner with Andre," "Last Year at Marienbad," "L'Aventura," "L'Eclisse" in 3D IMAX...yes, yes, YES! Sometime in the mid to late 80s, I wrote it would be fantastic to see David Jones' film of Harold Pinter's "Betrayal" in Showscan, that great, pretty-much-defunct high-speed process (60 frames per second), and I was absolutely serious.

I haven't truly enjoyed anything Soderberg has made since The Limey.

His bashing the theater experience during his promos for Bubble pissed me off as well.

" I was absolutely serious."

Actually, I wasn't. To kill a joke by explaining it, I was just commenting on the fact that the ad for the movie WORD PLAY was positioned directly above the blog entry, making it look like... well, you get it now.

I would completely disagree that film like MY DINNER WITH ANDRE belongs on an IMAX screen. Perhaps it might look better using Doug Trumball's Showscan process, which is the film equivalent of high def, but a film like ANDRE would be totally wrong blown up to five stories high.

It's a movie about an intimate conversation. I don't want to spend half my time thinking "My god, Wally Shawn has enormous pores on his nose!"

IMAX films about grand images, about wowing someone with visual overload.

You mean "Word Play" isn't going to be in Imax????? Fuck, there goes my whole damn summer!

Cause, you ain't seen people do a word scramble until you've seen them do it 75 feet high.

Yeah, when I said My Dinner at Andre: IMAX, I was being quite un-serious.

However, the fact that Jeffrey is serious about it is oddly charming. I suppose it's possible that intimate movies would become even more intimate and deeply felt if they were in such incredible and lifelike detail.

Then again, as Steve C. pointed out, Wally Shawn's pores do not a great experience make.
