Jesus Superman
Warner Bros. marketers have been too classy (or clueless) to try and sell Bryan Singer's Superman Reborns to Christian righties as a kind of Jesus-metaphor movie, the way Disney sold Narnia, etc. But maybe they should have? When those righties come out for a movie, they come out in force.

If they sell it as a Jesus allegory, they run several risks.
1)Public weariness of religious films.
2)The possibility that any relationship with Lois Lane will be seen as a Mary Magdalene allegory, and the movie will be condemned like Da Vinci Code.
3)Liberal rejection of a religious movie. (Just look at the first comment.)

I think what Jeffrey's saying is that there hasn't been a CONCERTED effort to market the movie to Christians as a Jesus-metaphor, even if that metaphor may be present, to some degree. Narnia was highly marketed among church groups, etc.

That Disney was able (obligated, really) to pitch Narnia to the Christian "conservative" audience is an aberration, not the rule. They were ABLE to do it because mainstream Christian culture in the West is largely aware that Lewis' "Narnia" books were written as religious metaphor, and they pretty much had to court them aggressively to counter the knee-jerk animosity present against the Disney corporation in that community (remember, at the time the Southern Baptists had only JUST stopped "officially" boycotting the company.)
The plain fact of it is that Superman ISN'T, at the core, a Jesus metaphor like Aslan is; rather, he's part of the same archetypal mythic-hero cycle that INCLUDES Jesus (along with Hercules, Luke Skywalker, etc.)
A few years back there was a big dust-up in the Evangelical community over preachers who were incorporating the (relevant) moral lessons of popular films and TV shows ("Spider-Man" most frequently) into their sermons. The "big guns" of the movement(s) came out pretty tough against it for various reasons, and the trend mostly subsided. I'd imagine any attempt by Warners to use "Superman=Jesus!" as a marketing tool would probably meet similar resistance.

People are confusing the message with the messengers. Whether one is a Christian or an atheist, the words ascribed specifically to Jesus in the bible form a profound and transcendant blueprint by which each and every person should model their life. The messages of peace, love, tolerance, compassion, empathy, et al along with the keys to happiness are undeniable...what man has done to desecrate and betray those messages--in the name of spreading the word--is appalling.

I would also add however that part of the problem is people equating love and tolerance with acquiescence and a laissez faire approach to life.
Jesus words are about love, but love is much more complex than just 'goin with the flow'.

Fundamentalist muslims have not "taken over" any European culture; they are a tiny minority in the western world. Any sensitivity shown to Islam is motivated by pragmatic concerns, namely fear of terrorism and alienating key oil suppliers (Iran is the world's third biggest oil exporter, and the wheels of the "Great Satan" don't turn without sweet, sweet crude).
Besides, we liberals can't have muslim sympathies because, as the right has been saying for years, we're all homosexual communists.

Christianity has been hijacked for many a person's own selfish purpose for centuries now, and I don't think it's going to be stopping anytime soon.
NYCBusyBody, it would appear you've had one or two bad runins with people saying they're Christians, and therefore somehow anyone saying they are a Christian is automatically a righ wing a-hole.
True religion, in the context of Christianity, is about serving others in love. Jesus did not come to condemn the world, but to save it by offering His life for the world's sin. The ability to say you'd gladly give up your life in order that someone else might live is a pretty beautiful notion.
Anyhow, I'm not trying to convert you or anything, but having an open mind about what Jesus actually taught isn't a bad thing at all in my books.
As far as my political allegiance, being Canadian, I'm not pigeon-holed by just two major political parties - there are four! Anyhow, i voted for the conservatives during the last go around, because they were saying stuff that needed to be done, and so far moving through with it. I'll vote liberal again one day, but the liberal parties in Canada needed to get their head out of their asses...(but the conservative party here is much more centrist than the fundies in the USA)
