Dear GOD, but what a self-important, pretentious little snert. This reads like a parody of what you'd expect from The New Yorker, save that it's "real."

We hear the same BS from the "upscale" critics every time a new sf/f film opens, no matter how good: "This stuff isn't worth spending the money on," "fantasy isn't important," "pity the poor directors FORCED to put in time on these ridiculous superhero movies."

Have NONE of these critics yet grasped the simple, inescapable truth that to the rising power-generation of big time film directors, stories of superheroes, giant monsters and the the like ARE what many of them are striving to make. Grab a random rising-star kid director, and you're more likely to find a guy who's hoping that the attention gained by his "serious" gritty drama work will garner him the necessary clout to do a feature version of his favorite Marvel hero than the other way around.

Just to follow up on what Steve C. said, I believe both Spiderman flicks were greeted with overwhelmingly positive reviews as well. I don't remember how the "upscale" critics greeted them in particular, but they were both over 90% on the Tomatometer.

Ebert has panned it this morning, too, and his favorite superhero movies ever are the original Superman, Spiderman 2, and Batman Begins.

I'm bumming at all the negative reviews so far (Dargis, Ebert, Lane) but take heart in the fact that I don't put much stock in those reviewers (Ebert like Garfield better than Superman? C'mon). Lane lost me when he dismissed the X-Men movies and criticized the citizens in Superman for falling for Clark Kent's disguise. Dargis just rubs me wrong most of the time, and too frequently tries to make herself the star of the review. Anyway, I still plan on seeing the movie and suspect (hope) it'll deliver the goods.

Overall, the critical reaction is looking very similar to the reaction to Singer's original X-Men: pretty positive overall, but not gushing. It sounds to me like he's finding his footing here, setting up some cool storlines for sequels, laying a solid foundation. Of course, I'll have to find out for myself tonight.

I'd be very hard-pressed to think of Roger Ebert as an "elitist" critic, high-brow as he may be sometimes.

People always want things to fall in easy labels. You're never going to agree with a critic 100% of the time, but sometimes you can find one whose certain viewpoint meshes with your own, and you can use that as a basic guide.

I'll be interested to see how many Superman fans who slam Dargis or Lane for being "elitist" will be horrified...HORRIFIED..at how damnably low-brow those same critics are if they admit they like Pirates 2.

I dont' think a "good critic" is someone I agree with. A good critic is someone who digests a film, make intelligent observations about it, and hopefully offers a credible perspective on the film as a whole, whether I agree with them or not. I've seen people like Anthony Lane slam films I love and I still have to acknowledge that they makes valid, interesting points. Sometimes it's good to have conflicting viewpoints circling around in youir head.

If all people cared about were thumbs up/thumbs down reviews, film criticism would be dead. And, believe it or not, film criticism is not dead. The relevance of a critic shouldn't be determind by how successful films are relative to their reviews. People are gonna see movies like The Da Vinci Code and X3 no matter what because of hype and advance anticipation, but it's still important that critics define a consensus perspective on just how bad (or good) these films actually are. And there's no doubt that films without major marketing support behind them succeed all the time because of critical praise. Brokeback Mountain never would have been the phenomenon that it was without the critics.

can someone please explain to me why the original superman is looked at through such rose colored glasses? i watched it the other night and man, was it boring. and i'm not one of those who needs constant visual stimulation from their films. i can handle (and usually prefer) a slow build if it goes somewhere. but in the movie, absolutely nothing happened. all build and no pay off. i bring this up because ebert mentions it in his review as being "an exuberance of action and humor." and i've seen a few others mention the original Superman as this life changing experience. and like the original Superman, this post is all build up and no pay off, so i'll end it here. anyone else agree or am i becoming a curmudgeon in my young age.

When a major critic hates an entire genre like Lane does - they are not qualified to review mainstream movies for a major publication.

If he was as clever or insightful as he seems to think he is, it might be one thing - but he is nothing but a tedious Pauline Kael wannabee and should just go away and leave mainstream movies in peace.

I get the impression his true love is classic English Lit. I should say he would be best suited to teaching AP English classes somewhere.
