Late "Snakes"
I still say August 18th is too long a wait for Snakes on a Plane to finally show up in theatres. It'll do pretty dynamic business, I expect, but it should be opening during one of the weak weekends in July. My son Jett is leaving for college only a few days after August 18th, and thousands of other freshmen, I presume, are looking at same or similar schedules. Won't this interfere with the usual word-of-mouth cycles and possible repeat business?

What weak weekend is there? At this point, the only way to effectively get the bump-up message out is to go July 21 or 28.
Not that they're going for the same audience, but Monster House and Lady in the Water both will open well on the 21st, not to mention the fact Clerks II is also on that date.
The next weekend, you have Miami Vice and the Ant Bully.
They're best off now to stay where they are.

College kids will swarm to this film the first chance they get to be with their new college buddies-- it will be the film that they bond with. So no, it won't hurt the film's box office, but may in fact enhance it.
