As things stand now (at 8:58 am), my luggage is in Los Angeles and I'm still in Seattle, at a Days Inn near the airport. I missed my flight back to LA last night, and it was definitely Alaska Airline's fault. When I got to the check-in counter around 6:55 pm both the check-in computer and the Alaska Airlines rep said the flight would be delayed until 9:30 pm, and that boarding would happen around 9 pm. No prob...I went to the gate area, hooked up my computer in a cafe and did some work. Two hours later I went over to the departure gate at 9 pm...empty. Checked with an Alaska rep -- "Oh, that flight left at 8:40 pm." They have me on a flight leaving this morning at 11:30.

Isn't that against security rules? Aren't they supposed to check to make sure the passenger is on the plane before letting the luggage go? That seems very wrong from a security standpoint.

At least we didn't check any luggage last night, but Nora and I ended up in a Best Western when the electronic ticket kiosk spit out our boarding passes, letting us know that our flight was delayed until 9:28 PM. We went over to the customer service desk to try and get on your flight, but were told no flights anywhere had any seats and ours was the last flight of the night. The plane had been delayed by an hour and a half out of San Diego and we would have plenty of time to kick around the airport. After a pleasant meal, I checked the big board, and the flight was gone. It took off from Seattle only 20 minutes late. There were no flights out until the morning and we wound up sharing a queen at a Best Western with a 5 AM wakeup call for a 7 AM flight to Ontario. I had to drive a rental car in this morning for a meeting I could not miss. And just made it. Lesson learned. Hover at the gate. Nobody knows anything.

At the risk of turning Hollywood-Elsewhere into Airlines-Elsewhere, Alaska is a useless airline. My flight sunday night was half an hour late leaving, which means that their two LA flights left what -- within and hour and a half of each other? (Guess they wanted to go home and watch the NBA.) And with jeff welles' bags on board? talk about security nightmares!!! seattle: great festival, great city, miserable airport. Which really colors a whole place, doesn't it?
