Weekend b.o.

Those estimates of Click reaching the mid '40s may turn out to be optimistic. I'm hearing $39 million and change for the weekend, and that doesn't factor in any Friday-to-Saturday dropoff due to the possibility that some out there might agree with Wall Street Journal critic Joe Morgenstern and tell their friends that this latest Adam Sandler comedy is "an abomination." Cars is looking at $30 million for the weekend with an estimated Sunday night cume of $155 mill. Jared Hess's Nacho Libre is down 55% from last Friday's opening and looking at a $12.5 million weekend haul. It might wind up with $60 to $70 million by the end of the run, compared to $44,540,956 earned by Napoleon Dynamite.

How do you get $30 million out of Cars this weekend? Is that a typo? It pulled less than 6.5 last night, and seems on track for 24 on the bright side, 20 on the slack.
And could this be the end of Adam Sandler as we know him?

Who knows? That movie where he fakes a gay wedding could end up being as successful as In & Out was a decade ago for Kevin Kline

The end of Sandler? This movie basically looks like it will do the same business as Mr. Deeds.

travis: In a way, it was the end of Sandler. He couldn't sell a film with his name alone attached to it anymore, like he could with Waterboy, Big Daddy, and to some extent, The Wedding Singer. But they're gonna call it a success, even at $35 million, until it drops worse than Nacho Libre next weekend.

good point daniel. i am interested to see how sandler does in empty city. he still could be worth something as a serious actor, i thought punchdrunk love was great, even though that may be more of a result of the director and not necessarily the actor. we'll see though.

For what it's worth, I thought "Click" was very well made. Sure, I could've done without Sandler's usual fart jokes, but in films like this and "50 First Dates," he's shown a more sensitive side that's very appealing to millions upon millions of viewers. It's just a shame that he betrays his own intelligence at times, but like "The Break-Up" before it, I have no problem with a little bit of dumbing down for the masses so that they'll see something that's actually good.

All these critics can trash Sandler all they want out of habit, but truth be told, "Click" is on a par in quality with "50 First Dates," although to be fair, Beckinsale has no personality, but the rest of the supporting cast that includes Henry Winkler, David Hasselhoff, Jennifer Coolidge, Julie Kavner, and Christopher Walken more than makes up for it.

Of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

By the way, I love how Wells said earlier how much he enjoyed the thrashings of Sandler, when he clearly was quoting some out of context. Here's an excerpt from a review that Wells quoted, but either failed to finish reading, or couldn't comprehend what Scott Foundas of LA Weekly was writing:

"Surely, nobody else could package the tragedy of a ridiculous man as a featherweight farce and have it turn into what I suspect will be a major hit. Sandler is young yet, but he could end up one of the genius men in American comedy."

Daniel, I'm not sure where you're coming from. Sandler's first movie after Little Nicky was Mr. Deeds, which made $126 million with his name alone attached to it.

And if The Wedding Singer, with Barrymore, which made $80 million was, to some extent, based on his name alone (according to you), then what do say about 50 First Dates, with Barrymore, which made $120 million?

saw Click sat night with a packed crowd and thought the film was a blast. It was funny and emotionally moving. Sandler knows his target audience as well as anyone in the business and this film will spread solid word of mouth and have legs at the boxoffice.
As for the wall street journal joe morgestern, robin williams said in good morning vietnam (which applys to this tired bitter old guy) sir you are in dire need of a good blowjob!

But that wasn't exactly a Waterboy or a Big Daddy.

Without Barrymore, it'd probably do as well as Wedding Singer, adjusted for inflation 7 years later.

Zelter...go slit your wrists, man, please. No, don't...really...I don't kno how open to suggestion you may be.

Adjusted for inflation 7 years later??? Open excel, punch in "=80*1.03^7" and see what you get. It isn't anywhere NEAR 120. Get your HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS, hombre.

Sandler "over"? I just don't understand what you guys are talking about -- Sandler is an incredibly durable box office star. That seems indisputable to me. His success is defined by its reliability. (I can't stand his movies, so don't think I'm saying any of this out of brand loyalty.)
