A friend who enjoys a degree of familiarity with the Zodiac team tells me that the recently-revealed January '07 release date "seems to be the wide release date" and that the current talk is about doing "a late fall campaign for the Oscars. The January release date was determined before anybody at the studios even saw the film." (To which I would ask, determined by whom? And why?) "I have the feeling that this film will play major for the Oscars," the friend continues. "It runs just under three hours, is very '70s-style and way out of Fincher world... nothing like Seven and a real 'journalism film.'" If this plan turns out to be actual, wouldn't you think that the Paramount p.r. folks would have shared this once the news got out earlier this week that Zodiac has (apparently) been bumped out of '06?

Paramount's still recovering from Sherry Lansing to position Zodiac as Oscar bait. Also, no one in the cast list is an Oscar-caliber actor.

So, Dan, no one in the cast is Oscar-caliber?
Last time I checked both Gylenhaal and Downey were Oscar nominees...
And what does Sherry Lansing have to do with it? The picture is either Oscar-worthy or not, and let's face it, except for Silence of the Lambs, serial killer movies don't exactly scream out Oscar

There are several actors in this movie that could be easily called and rightly so "Oscar Caliber" and yes Jake and Downey come to mind immediately. They have been nominated and I am sure they will both be nominated again at some point in their careers. I am trying to stay positive and hope this movie is as great as I thought it would be when I first started hearing about it. Great story, great director, great cast and from what I hear great script!

Gylenhall didn't win and still isn't a star, while
Robert Downey Jr. blew his chance at success on coke.

This might be a good film but I don't think it is an Oscar type of a film. David Fincher is just not an Oscarish director. I don't know why people are getting their hopes up about it.

Fuck not being an oscar "type" film, Fincher has more respect from his peers than most directors dream of, remember that. Gyllenhal was worthy last year, just had too much competition. Downey Jr. has been on a great roll lately (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Game 6, A Scanner Darkly) and he almost seems clean, or he isn't getting caught. I see a showdown between this and Dreamgirls and just like every year we'll have a showdown of old academy voters vs. the younger voters.
PS: Jeff, please update the oscar balloon, I laugh everytime I see Southland Tales & World Trade Center on there.

There will not be a showdown between this and Dreamgirls. I am not a Dreamgirls fan but it could be big. Zodiac will not be bigger than Flags of Our Fathers, Little Children, Babel and many other films that are yet to be released. I liked Seven but Fight Club was one of the worst films I have ever seen.

I hope it's not "Oscar Caliber". Oscar darlings tend to suck. Oh... and Daniel... get a grip man.
