Denby on "Vice"

Miami Vice is "about guns and sex and fast boats, and, baffling as it is at times, it's still the kind of brutal fantasy that many of us relish a great deal more than yet another aerated digital dream. We can enjoy the pretense that police work is like this -- sleepless, incredibly dangerous, constantly vehicular, and unsullied by paperwork. The honesty of this kind of movie can be measured by how juicy its sense of licentious pleasure is. Despite its generally saturnine mood, this one passes the test. "

Colin Farrell's Crockett "eyes the Chinese-Cuban mistress and business manager of the Colombian big guy -- Isabella, played by the beautiful Gong Li. She stares back, they exchange a few words, and immediately take off for Cuba to drink and make out. As the two lovers race across the Caribbean in a twin-engine Super Cat, the movie achieves a quality of screw-you willfulness, a sense of reckless freedom. That's the essence of crime, and, for us landlubbers, it makes up for a lot of narrative confusion and chewed-off gibberish that seems designed to shut us out." -- New Yorker critic David Denby in the 7.31.06 issue.

Mr. Denby is one of the very few current film
critics that is able to write a great review every
now and then. Most haven't in decades, and won't
before they die. I can't say I agree with him even
half the time (much like Ms. Kael), but he can sum
up the correct opinion about a film better than
anybody hacking away on this planet today. His
review of 'Alexander' was one of the more fair and
on target of the mainstream critics.

Wow, I never equated online poker to Miami Vice until just this moment. So nice of three people to point that out.

"She stares back, they exchange a few words, and immediately take off for Cuba to drink and make out." Words fail me. If this is true (and I haven't seen the film), this is plotting and writing on the level of the first Transporter film, which contained all the complexity one expected of a movie written by a action film geek fourteen-year-old.

i love those long smoldering silent glance in mann's films that pass for depth or conversation. i'm just praying for at least one or two shots of foxx and farrell staring out venetian blinds as moby plays to soundtrack whatever vague alpha male discontent burbles inside...

i do love making fun of this movie, it's true.

if mann had made this his first intentional comedy...huge.
