"Hoax" trailer

People like me -- i.e., those with some understanding of online technical issues, but lacking a Master Jedi Degree in advanced web skills -- are currently being blocked from downloading the Mozilla ActiveX plugin, which means they are not permitted to view the new trailer for Hoax (Miramax, 11.3), the Lasse Hallstrom drama that will presumably turn up at the Toronto Film Festival.

It's about the fraud that author Clifford Irving (Richard Gere) perpetrated in the '70s by selling a fake Howard Hughes biography to McGraw-Hill. (I interviewed Irving for an EW piece 11 or 12 years ago.) The costars are Alfred Molina, Marcia Gay Harden, Julie Delpy and Hope Davis. If anyone sees the trailer, please let me know how it plays. Better yet, if anyone knows of a URL that allows you to download that infuritating Mozilla ActiveX plugin, please forward. Update: The trailer is viewable after all at another location.

This actually looks pretty slick for a Hallstrom movie. Has a 'Catch Me If You Can' feel.

And again... Julie Delpy = awesome.

You're all there for Ms. Delpy? She's fine and dandy, but just admit that no one will be there for Ms. Delpy...or Alfred Molina...or Richard Gere really stretching to play early-40s. In fact no one will be there.

We'll all catch it on HB0 9 months later and tell our coworkers that it's not half bad.

Oh I agree... no one will be there for Delpy except me-- but that's a shame. I wish she would get bugger roles. You're right though... HBO movie. Maybe I'll just rent Before Sunrise/Sunset.

Wow - what a BRILLIANT still.

Not a big Hallstrom fan - but who knows, maybe he'll hit this one out of the park.

craptastic:

I have a sneaking suspicion that Delpy's career has been greatly hindered by refusing to sleep with directors/producers, etc...there really can be no other explanation for her not having become a major star.

I remmember a brief interview with Delpy in The Face in the early/mid '90s & she was dropped from a $500k -paying ad campaign in Japan because of a (false) tabloid story that she was pregnant. She insisted that she wasn't but they were so used to actors lying that they just didn't believe her. The French thing was an issue for casting agents in LA too, as they just couldn't buy her as an all-American girl - too aloof, too arthouse, and there's not enough roles as an 'exotic' beauty to go around. I think she's great but I wouldn't feel too sorry for her as she's said that she has a great, full life in France, and it must be nice to have an Oscar nomination under her belt.
