Hounddog Fanning

"The two taboos in Hollywood are child abuse and the killing of animals," a source tells N.Y. Daily News columnist Lloyd Grove. "In this movie, both things happen." Actually, Grove reports, the script for Hounddog , described as "a dark story of abuse, violence and Elvis Presley adulation in the rural South," calls for a character to be played by Dakota Fanning, 12, "to be raped in one explicit scene and to appear naked or clad only in underpants in other shots or scenes."

Hold up...I think this issue should be handed over to Kathy Griffin...no? Hound- dog, which will reportedly cost less than $5 million to shoot, will be directed by Deborah Kampmeier (Virgin), who also wrote the script.

Fanning is kind of eerily ageless right now, but you can't deny she's a precocious performer. I'll reserve judgment on the flick.

As for Kathy Griffin, I just LOVE that she told Spielberg and his goons to flip off when they threatened to put her on his sh*t-list.

I didn't get all the vitriol spilled over War of the Worlds-- I felt it had some great set pieces, and it kept me interested-- but Fanning was BY FAR the worst thing about the film.

Yes, I know little girls scream when they're scared. But Fanning's scream was so awful, so hideous, so mind-rattling that listening to it over. . . and over. . . and over again made me pray for the sweet releast that only death could bring.

Cheers,
Dave at Garfield Ridge

P.S. Oh, yeah-- the "happy reunion" ending to WOTW sucked, too.

But Fanning? Awful. AWFUL.

I saw Kampmeier's first film VIRGIN and it was a disaster -- atrociously directed and embarrassingly written. There was a pretty good lead performance, so it's possible that Kampmeier knows how to direct young performers. But it -- and, by the looks of it, this new one -- was a good example of how the indie world just falls in love with anything that smacks of edge, regardless of whether it's garbage or not. If this thing wins, or is even nominated for, an Oscar, I'm eating my shorts.

I read the full story. It was great reading both Fanning's mother and her agent dance their quotes around that they are greedy bums. I also envisioned Dakota stamping her feet and demanding not to be in any more shitty Robert De Niro thrillers. It also spoke of Fanning's status as a "bankable star." I don't think people went to "WOTW" to hear her scream through the whole damn thing.

How many times have we read this kind of stuff, then see something totally different when the film is released? More than Fanning, who is a truly gifted young actress, I trust the instincts of Robin Wright Penn, David Morse and Piper Laurie, all not necessarily known for shitty choices and crappy acting. Anyone who saw Morse in the off-broadway masterpiece "How I Learned To Drive" or Wright-Penn's majestic ten minutes in "Nine Lives" should wait and see.

The whole thing reeks of "now dakota needs an oscar worthy role on her resume." Someone should start suiing these disgusting, trashy stage mothers and fathers for exploiting their children. i feel especially bad for those stuck with selling charlotte's web as a children's film starring dakota fanning. The "rape" association is only going to tarnish her once innocent name. Parents will wonder what a dakota fanning film now means. Hurry up Paramount and fix this situation. Tonight a whole room full of people at my gym watched as a ten minute report ran on CNN about Dakota with a headlines that kept flashingP: "Dakota too young for rape role." Two things:

1) I have no problem with a film exploring child abuse. That being said, are the filmmakers so unimaginative that they can't come up with a way to imply the abuse without Dakota being "naked or clad only in underpants"? Take a cue from our best horror filmmakers: what you don't see is usually more effective and terrifying.

2) The tone of Dakota's agent and parents is DISTURBING. Basically: "We're going to let our 11 year old daughter pretend to be raped on film so we can win an Oscar. Watching the dailies...she sells it!"
To steal a line from a poster at Defamer: Dakota's mom just stole the title of "Creepiest Showbiz Parent" away from Joe Simpson.

Just a small clarification, if it matters... While Lolita was intended to go to theatres but ended up on Showtime, Bastard Out Of Carolina (great movie, and yes, that's the movie that this will be compared to) was always intended for television. It was originally supposed to air on TNT, but Ted Turner felt it was too graphic and what not, so it eventually had a very successful run on (natch) Showtime.

Well, hopefully the filmmakers will film their child-rape scene before Thursday, when such things will be illegal under federal law:

Senate approves filmed-sex bil

WASHINGTON (Hollywood Reporter) - The U.S. Senate on Thursday approved legislation setting up a national registry for sex offenders that includes a new record-keeping requirement for Hollywood movies that have steamy love scenes.

On a unanimous voice vote, the Senate approved the Adam Walsh Act setting up the registry and including a provision that would require Hollywood studios to ensure that they keep records of the ages of the actors who pretend to have sex in motion pictures and TV shows.

The legislation caught the attention of Hollywood after Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., attached an amendment in the House that would have required mainstream studios to adhere to the same paperwork requirements as X-rated movie makers.

While the studios have to keep records of actors in movies and TV shows that participate in simulated sex scenes proving that they are over 18, they do not have to segregate them as long as they certify to the Justice Department that they keep those records under the course of their normal business.

Under the bill, movie and TV show makers do not face specific criminal penalties for failing to maintain records of performers' ages, though they would face the general penalties applicable when people lie to the Justice Department.

The new language also does away with requirements that the films carry labels similar to X-rated movies certifying compliance, removes a prohibition against state and local production incentives for movies with simulated sex and would affect only products made after the law goes into effect and does not give the Justice Department the right to inspect the records anytime it chooses.

Me preocupa ella. No en el filme, sino en su confusión en el rodaje. De tantas cámaras que se pusieron en frente, éstas deben ser las más obscuras...

i think this movie will actually be very good. this child does very well at what she does. we all know child abuse and rape of a child exists but no one really knows what its like unless they've experienced it. i can only deduce that this movie is being made to help portray a real life situation like this and in order to do so you're going to need a child for this role and dakota fanning is by far the most talented actress (under the age of 20) out there. if hollywood can make a tv show about rape (law and order svu) it can make a movie about it.

however, i do believe that THE only reason dakota's family are so "supportive" is because they want that oscar. i doubt that they are this supportive because this was a role that dakota really wanted.

if you don't like the subject material stop whining and don't go see it...perod.

I am a 43 year old woman. Of all the women friends I have, literally all of them, between 10 and 16 years of age experienced some kind of unsolicited and sexually inappropriate approach or outright assault from older boys and grown men around them. Ask any woman friend you know.
We are so reluctant to talk about this reality that women routinely repress it and often feel dirty and damaged for years before they can talk about it and let it go. The epidemic of cutting, anorexia & bulemia that p[lagues girls this age (now more than ever before) is the direct fallout of our silence on this subject.
Young boys see and read stories of fights and violence all the time leading up to their adolescence. By the time it happens to them, most of them see it coming and have acted out in their heads how they will react. They are at least somewhat prepared for the eventuality and can therefore more easily avoid it or digest the emotional aftermath when it happens. They generally do not feel like they are bad or dirty people if they get jumped.
Little girls on the other hand see sexy (if not overtly sexual) images of women from their earliest infancy. They are attractive to them and they aspire to be like them - as they should do in order to become confident, mature women. Yet our society is so reluctant to admit their sexuality to young girls that they think they can protect them from it by refusing to discuss it.
We women were all once little girls. Quite suddenly, over a few months our bodies change. Often our fathers and brothers may become uncomfortable looking at us, or hugging us, or they may look at us or treat us differently all of a sudden. Simultaneously, perfect strangers begin hooting at us on the street and groping us on crowded buses. We look in the mirror and see a womanly body reflected. We are not sure whether to feel proud or dirty or both. Sometimes we are only 9 or 10 when this happens, sometimes older. But it happens to all of us and our world shifts suddenly and radically and none of the adults want to talk about it beyond giving us a box of tampons and a sex ed talk. So we are ignorant. And vulnerable. And bad things can and do happen.....all the time.....
Young girls need to be prepared for the effects their sexuality has on the world so that they can move into it with confidence and awareness rather than with ignorance and vulnerability. They need to be allowed to talk about bad things that can and do happen, so that they can be prepared and aware, and, in the unfortunate event that something bad does happen to them, they can feel allowed to speak up about it rather than to punish themselves with shame and cutting and starvation.
Ms Kampmeier, Miss Fanning and her mother are courageous women who have decided to take on the taboos of our society and talk about them. I feel sure that Kampmeier, as a woman director, is coming at this subject matter with extreme concern and compassion for the well being of her actress. Ms Fanning is a talented young actress who will reach thousands of young girls coming of age who need to know that it is ok to talk about this stuff and move on. And Fanning's mom is empowering her daughter to use her considerable talents in a way that can effect positive change in society rather than simply fill the pockets of disney execs.

Kelsey: You don't need to sexually exploit a child on film to understand that child molestation is a terrible evil. To do so is only a slightly lesser evil in itself. No one with any sense of goodness in them can condone the use of children in sexual situations, real or imagined. The old, tired arguement of "just don't watch it" has been the ongoing excuse for pornographic excess for as long as I can remember. If you truely cared for kids, you would be as outraged about this as anyone.
