I first saw this via Anne Thompson's RiskyBiz blog, but here's Mel Gibson's apology statement about what happened in Malibu yesterday with the DUI and the reported anti-Semitic and "sugar tits" comments: "After drinking alcohol on Thursday night, I did a number of things that were very wrong and for which I am ashamed. I drove a car when I should not have, and was stopped by the LA County Sheriffs. The arresting officer was just doing his job and I feel fortunate that I was apprehended before I caused injury to any other person. I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable. I am deeply ashamed of everything I said. Also, I take this opportunity to apologize to the deputies involved for my belligerent behavior. They have always been there for me in my community and indeed probably saved me from myself. I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior and for that I am truly sorry. I have battled with the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse. I apologize for any behavior unbecoming of me in my inebriated state and have already taken necessary steps to ensure my return to health."

1. What Mel Gibson did was asinine, dangerous, irresponsible and what he said was racist.
2. His apology and admission took courage, character and fortitude. He easily could have tried to do the celebrity spin and deny, put out counter statements etc.
3. Anyone who has financed, produced, directed, starred in or enjoyed consuming viciously anti-Catholic/christian Hollywood fare like The DaVinci Code or V for Vendetta can keep their mouth shut on this subject lest you be called a hypocrite.
You have nothing to add to this discussion.
I still look forward to seeing Apocalypto as much as I did 48 hours ago.

You couldn't have possibly seen V for V, but I don't even see how you could conjure up any anti-Catholic or anti-Christian bias out of any of the public discussion of V for V. The film clearly has anti-Bush and anti-Blair subtext. Maybe you're confusing covert criticism of Bush with anti-Christian bias, the same way NYCBusybody is always treating criticism of the government of Israel as anti-Semitism.

I agree that Gibson's apology took courage, character and fortitude. But courage, character and fortitude only lasts until the next bender. And unfortunately, Mel has provided over the years plenty of evidence of anti-Semitic leanings even when he's sober. His drunken rant just confirms what everyone has long suspected. In vino veritas.
Alcoholism is a terrible disease, and I do hope Gibson finds the strength to recover.
By the way, StevieT in the previous Mel Gibson thread is right. "Sugar tits" is junior high school level wit.

I always look forward to Nicol D's thoughtful take on anything controversial. He/she has the treat-everyone-else-like-a-child tone of self-appointed authority most commonly found in radio talk show hosts, and seems to enjoy commentary to conversation, always entering her thoughts as if they were law and the final word on the given topic.
Still, despite her commonly held belief that anyone who has seen either The DaVinci Code or V For Vendetta (dvd out Tuesday, you heathens!), I've three questions for him/her on the three inarguable statements of undeniable truth:
1. Do you think that an apology really makes up for a transgression of this (or any) nature?
2. If Tom Hanks and Natalie Portman* -- in private, silent prayer -- apologized to Jesus and/or sought out his guidance before making their respective films, and the Good Lord forgot to i.m. you regarding it, does that make your continued condemnation of their work an anti-Christian act ("Judge not lest ye be judged", don't try to remove the splinter in your brother's eye when you've got a rafter in your own, etc...)?
3. Do you honestly believe that there are no factions or sects or members of Christianity that do not live up to the standards set out by Christ? In V For Vendetta (which I'm guessing you did not see -- hence your eligibility to post comments on this whole Mel Gibson matter), the film only attacked crazed, extremely rightwing, hateful and murderous "Christians". That is to say, Christians in name only. These types did/do/will exist, wouldn't you agree? So maybe folks that like V For Vendetta can post here, don't'cha think?**
*Okay, so she's Jewish. But maybe, Lord willing, she's one of those self-hating types.
**DaVinci Code fans must still use the service entrance.

I am glad that Mel apologized and I hope that he gets his disease under control.
I also hope that he accepts the theory of evolution, that using a condom every now and again won't condemn you to Hell and that it's quite all right if you are gay. If he doesn't accept those things, big whoop. As long as I have the freedom to criticize him and he to criticize me, everything will be fine.
At least you and I agree on one thing: nothing from the last 48 hours has changed my opinion on APOCALYPTO; it looks very interesting. Tally ho!

2.I can condemn the work all I want. I have never condemed them as people as I do not know what is in their hearts although the work they choose (Portman seems to be on a hate Catholics/Christians bender)sure seems to give a lot of clues.
Everyone can be forgiven however, I suspect if they had really asked for 'guidance' they would not have made the films.
3. So if someone made a film where say all (Jews, gays, blacks, Muslims, insert minority group here) were evil that would be alright with you?

This anti-C/anti-C rap against V for V doesn't make any sense at all. Especially the anti-Catholic part. The Hugo Weaving character explicitly models himself after Guy Fawkes, a Catholic who himself was in revolt against the anti-Catholic English royalty and aristocracy.
None of the characters, villainous nor heroic, are identified as Catholic, or could even be reasonably construed to be Catholic. There is a corrupt bishop, who is in league with the dictatorial government, but he is pretty clearly Anglican, not Catholic.
And even if this corrupt bishop is Anglican, how does that make the movie anti-Christian in any way? There isn't any implication in the film that the Anglican Church is guilty of collusion with dictatorship. Only that some fictional corrupt leaders of the church are doing so, and that the dictatorial government is seeking cover for its actions by trying to identify itself with the Church.
But honestly, how does that amount to any kind of anti-Christian, or even anti-Anglican bias? The film certainly does not say or even imply that all Christians or Anglicans are evil. It does say that one particular (fictional) bishop is violating the responsibilities of his powerful position in the church.
This all seems like the kind of slipping gear in the mind that says if you criticize one Catholic, Jew, black, white, Muslim, gay, straight, male, female, whatever, then it means you hate every Catholic, Jew, black, white, Muslim, gay, straight, male, female, whatever.
It's the kind of "thinking" that says if you criticize the White House, then you don't support the American troops, and you must want the Viet Cong, or the communists, or the terrorists, or whoever to win. If you criticize the government of Israel, then you must be an anti-Semite. If you criticize a bishop or a pope, then you must be anti-Catholic. If you criticize one corrupt Muslim leader, then you must be anti-Islam.
It's just a way to avoid thinking, and to make people who say anything you don't want to hear to STFU.

I don't think Gibson could have made a more appropriate apology than that - he said the things he should have and that is a good thing.
It does, however, leave his rabid fanbase who had been cackling with glee yesterday about his macho antics holding the bag. They were all set for him to blame the bleeding heart liberals of the world for framing him - and now he goes and actually takes responsibility for his actions like an adult?
Some people are so used to the pattern our President has taken in blaming everybody for his mistakes but himself, they just cannot emotionally handle anybody they admire doing otherwise.

Really?
Hmmm... Oscar-winning filmmaker makes a wildly successful movie that many people -- rightly or wrongly, it honestly doesn't matter -- attack as being anti-semitic. He goes on how many different talk shows talking about how he loves Jews, how his film isn't anti-semitic and how he's being targeted by a vast conspiracy. Two years later, he gets drunk and begins raving like an anti-semitic drunkard and you don't figure there's anything more to the story? I wonder if Mel Gibson only started believing that Jews are the cause of all of the world's problems *since* "The Passion." That'd be unexpected...

sorry. this kind of touches a nerve. if this wasn't mel gibson would you be praying for him? if it was mel gibson and he hadn't made that passion flick, would you be praying for him? ask yourselves this, o defenders of mel, the drunk driver. then if you say yes, perhaps you should use some of that prayer for those who have been killed by idiots such as mel.

One outta three ain't bad. 33 percent is a 33 more points than you normally get, Nicol. Courage, character and fortitude in admitting what is undeniable? nein, Herr Scheißekopf. The anti-catholicism of Da Vinci is a plot device, no one but a complete imbecile would leave the church because of the portrayal of Opus Dei (sorry if that applies to you, Nicol). The Croix de Lorraine theory is a nice stretch, take an obscure anti-swastika swastika (from the Free French flag) and turn it into a symbol of freedom in the service of fascism and (here's where you come in...) make the connection with an even more obscure sign of Catholicism to brainwash a generation against Rome? Let's see, you have an Anglican Bishop that sexually abuses children & rather than make him Catholic, the filmakers decide to aim a broadside against the church by using an unknown symbol? Good one, Sherlock.
Your real objection to V is that its anti-fascist. The totalitarians stand for everything you do. Being called a hypocrite by scum like you would be a badge of honor for neophytes.

I guess Hollywoods jew elite have hammered the last nail into Mel Gibson. I mean he had the audacity to make a movie about an event considered sacred to all Christians. After all the groveling he had to do to get Hollywood jews to give him a pass on the movie, (which he never got by the way), he gets condemned by the same despicable arrogant group for letting off steam. I always wondered why jews were despised around the world, the whole Mel Gibson affair has illuminated that for me. Oh by the way, I was always an ardent supporter of Israel and though not a big fan of jews, certainly didnt hate them. Gotta tell ya, you arrogant ass holes have created a ground swell of anti-semitism with this whole issue.
