Antony Lives No More

Roddy McDowell's "Antony lives no more!" speech from Joseph L. Mankiewicz's Cleopatra ('63) -- one of the few really good moments from an otherwise tiresome and pretty much discredited film.

I forgot this scene. The film really started going bad to worse after Rex Harrison's Caesar was killed. Hearing that speech almost makes me want to rent it that turkey.

It was McDowall, not McDowell.

A bit of trivia:
A mistake by 20th Cent. Fox cost Roddy McDowall an almost certain Oscar nomination for best supporting actor for the part. The studio entered him in the lead actor catogory rather than supporting actor. Fox tried to get the Academy to change it, but they wouldn't, saying the ballots already were at the printer. Fox bought space for open letter in the trades, apologizing to him: "We feel that it is important that the industry realize that your electric performance as Octavian in 'Cleopatra,' which was unanimously singled out by the critics as one of the best supporting performances by an actor this year, is not eligible for an Academy Award nomination in that category...due to a regrettable error on the part of 20th Century Fox."
