If I've learned anything, it's that the better the Scorsese movie, typically the lamer the trailer. His best work has a spirit that's hard to capture in a trailer; I'm pretty indifferent about this one, but I look forward to the film since the cast intrigues me (lots of Marty newbies) and I think the story's ripe for a better handling than the not-bad/not-great original.

The best Boston accent I've heard, aside from Matt and Ben in GWH, was Robert Mitchum in THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE. He nailed it. Is that movie ever going to be released on DVD?
I hope this is good. Scorsese usually delivers with storylines like this. And it has Jack! As A Villian!
That said... It will have to wow me to forget the original Infernal Affairs this is based on.
I know that Scorsese's pic will look better and all... but there is something inherently cool about Hong Kong and Japanese Genre films. Since we don't know the actors we can take the movie and it's plot alot easier and we become more involved because the actors don't carry any baggage with us.
I think this is why John Woo hit it so big with Western Audiences with The Killer and Hard Boiled and others but when he came here and used his style in pics like Hard Target and Face/Off they are not the same because we identify with the actors to much. I know, I know it shouldn't matter but I am only talking about remakes of foreign films. Now I know that Face/Off and Hard Target were not remakes but Woo's themes are very Asian and they don't match up with our known 'Hollywood' actors as well. Especially Face/Off... does that make it a bad movie? No I enjoyed it fine enough... But the same movie/style done in Hong Kong I think would have played better.
Hard Target though was just fun in a drive-in way and suffered from to much of The Muscle From Brussels. But the Villians brought their A game... Lance H. and the totally excellent and very underrated and underused Arnold Vosloo

But what's with the music? Gimme Shelter and Comfortably Numb are great songs but they've been played to death for the last few decades. Hasnt Marty heard ANYTHING since 1979 that had him humming along? At least Infernal Affairs was timely enough to use a vaguely contemporary soundtrack (largely borrowed from Heat as i recall...which raises an interesting comparison - Michael Mann may not square up to Scorsese as a director but he sure knows how to score a film)

I have to think that Scorsese casting three pug nose actors who kind of look alike is intentional - like 3 versions of what the same person could turn out to be in different circumstances?

I'm surprised that none of HE's elite cinephile readership has yet mentioned that this is a remake of one of the most remarkable films to come from modern Hong Kong, 2002's "Infernal Affairs," by Andrew Lau and Alan Mak. It spawned two sequels in HK and is frequently compared to "The Godfather" for the Coppola films' structure (the film, a "prequel," followed by a difficult-to-describe story that takes places before, during and after the original.) But "Affairs" isn't like "The Godfather" at all. It's a cat-and-mouse tale of double-cross, betrayal and loyalty, and its real strength -- which I hope the Scorcese film can match -- is its sharp, dynamic and always surprising narrative and its talented cast of both HK matinee idols and character actors. This is one amazing movie (make that three, actually) that you need not wait for until the American remake.
I also think it's criminal that the names of Lau and Mak don't show up anywhere in this trailer, even though I admire screenwriter William Monaghan's work in Ridley Scott's "Kingdom of Heaven." I think the original creators deserve credit, even in this little trailer.
By the way, you can see all three "Infernal Affairs" films on DVD. The first was released in the US via Miramax Video. All three are staples in Chinatown video stores in any big city.
