Roger Michell's Venus (Miramax, 12.15), which has that allegedly delicious Peter O'Toole lead performance, is going to play at the Toronto Film Festival. And Alfonso Cuaron 's Children of Men (Universal, 9.29), which everyone wet their pants over at Comic-Con and which Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu says has the visual chops of a Stanley Kubrick film, is not going to Toronto.

"Children of Men" horrid? It looks intreguing to me. The fact the Cuaron is directing makes me want to see it.

I'm not a big Cuaron fan, though. In fact, I don't like any of his previous films. But I'm still looking forward to this one, particularly because Innaritu's statement makes it sound really good.

"So are some of the finest erections in Europe!"
Sorry...couldn't help it.
(You have to have seen O'Toole playing an Errol Flynn-type actor in MY FAVORITE YEAR to dig this. One gets the feeling that the part was not exactly a "stretch" for O'Toole, since his character is staggering drunk for most of the film.)
That said, am looking foward to seeing VENUS, eventually.

I saw 'Children of Men' yesterday. It's, dare I say it, a masterpiece, or at least very close to that. It's technically brilliant (multiple times, I found myself wondering, "How the hell did they do that?") and extremely engaging. An adrenaline rush of a film, it has everything: high-stakes drama, well placed comedy and brutal yet exhilarating action. Extremely highly recommended.
