Kevin and Andre

Horror and Kevin Smith? Doesn't sound right. The words "profoundly awful idea" may even apply. I've previously suggested his writing suggested a GenX Who's Afraid of Viriginia Woolf, which I know he has in him. And here's a new pitch: a 150-minute My Dinner with Andre with Jason Mewes and I-don't-know-who-else. Maybe Kevin, maybe somebody else playing Mewes' old friend, maybe an actress playing a hot date, maybe Nick Nolte playing his dad. Shot in a restaurant like Andre, with nothing but closeups and two-shots and just dialogue, dialogue, dialogue.

Smith should take inspiration from Warhol and film himself eating breakfast, lunch and dinner in one continuous shot like Empire.

Portions of the Kevin Smith college campus tour dvd (why can't I remember the name of it now?) were almost like My Dinner With Andre with jason sitting next to the podium as a dope addled Wallace Shawn. Ok, maybe not.

Kevin Smith has no visual style. How can he make a horror movie? The plot would be 5 teens sitting in a cabin talking about a serial killer who had sex with a donkey.

I thought he was gonna direct that movie version of Degrassi: The Next Generation! Seriously, he was talking about (a year or two ago) and seriously, he should go for it! Degrassi rules.

I like the dialog he comes up with. Maybe have the actors talk a bit slower for slow-pokes like me who need an extra second to get the words processed in the brain...Haha. One scene throughout a movie won't fill the seats. Maybe 2 or 3 settings and great dialog, that'll get the lines going...;)

Amazing how the name Kevin Smith creates all sorts of hate from some posters here.

And I think I know why: he's living the dream most of these guys will never know.

He can do whatever the hell he wants to. He should join in the Grindhouse flicks that Tarantino and Rodriguez are doing. That could be it. And I bet it's more horror like Shaun of the Dead in tone, over nightmare on Elm Street or Blair Witch.

I don't know why so many people are saying this. It's doing just fine. $22 million so far at the box office and it only cost $10 mil to produce. Remember it's all relative. And where Smith's films really clean are on DVD anyways.

He really just can't catch a break from you guys. Before Clerks II was released, everyone was bitching that he cashing in and doing the same old thing. Now that he wants to try something new, you're all over him again.

I say, let him stretch his wings, I'd love to see a Kevin Smith horror film. I'm not going to expect The Exorsist or anything... something more like Scream, but I want to see him try. However it turns out, I'm sure I'll have a good time with it.

Why Not?:

How exactly is a film that has currently made more than 4 times it's production budget in just theatrical underperforming?

It's not making Pirates money, but no-one ever expected it to. As a matter of fact, it performed pretty much exactly as expected, so you can't claim it underperformed based on expectations, either. It's Smith's 2nd highest opening, and it had 2 doughey no-names as leads.

So, how again did it underperform?

No, that's why you should hate Kevin Federline. The reason people hate Smith is because, unlike Federline, he has a real gift for storytelling, and instead of trying to expand on that, he goes too often to the well with noest-common denominator cartoons like Jay & Silent Bob.

Horror movie? Sure, he should go for it...after all, some of the scariest stories, whether it's the old campfire story of the hook or Arch Oboler's radio plays, just worked through solid storytelling without any visuals at all.

Marc Edward Heuck says ...

Why not a horror film? If anything, his extremely deep knowledge of religious arcana that was played for laughs in DOGMA could be the base of some good spooky gothic tale of the supernatural. Plus, if you think about it, fear is a denominator in his better comedy -- fear of other people (CLERKS), fear of rocking a friendship and sexual pasts (CHASING AMY), fear of being slandered by strangers (JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK), and of course, fear of adulthood and responsibility (MALLRATS, JERSEY GIRL, CLERKS II). I think he could twist it around and give us something creepy.

I have faith in the dude. I find it amazing people cry out "Do something new/different!" Then he announces he'll do just that and people go "You can't fucking do that! No! It'll be terrible"

And anyone who says Clerks 2 underperformed is insane or retarded. $5 million to produce, very very low marketing costs and its made $22 million and is pretty much as expected. Besides, they already made back the production costs with foreign sales, before they even started shooting the movie. So people who criticize box office performance, learn a thing or two about film finance before throwing in your misguided 2 cents.

I will always be there opening weekend for Kevin Smith films. His dialogue is always smart and he doesn't have this pretentious auteur thing going that so many name-above-the-title directors do whose films routinely bomb.

This sounds to me like it could be a lot of fun. I could imagine this resembling one of Kvein Williamson's better efforts, or maybe someting like Slither. I wonder if Smith plans to make it more funny or scary (or a nice hodgepodge of both)?

Check out a run of Daredevil that Kevin did a few years back featuring Mysterio. Basically, Mysterio used illusions, some targeting Matt Murdock's Catholic faith, to screw with Daredevil's mind. There was also some extremely creepy stuff in Dogma when the angels went on their killing spree. (Okay, so the sh*t demon sucked.)

Kevin will do just fine with a horror film. However, at all costs, he should avoid an ironic "Scream" type of film. Play it straight and avoid the jokes.

k. smith should do a new jersey horror movie -- ...maybe a young, nubile female is kidnapped by her taxi driver (played by Smith) en route to newark airport and he takes her back to his house which is filled with comic book memorabilia and forces her to watch Jersey Girl all day.
