N.Y. Times Ed Leibowitz asks if it's "better to mimic or transcend" famous figures you're playing in a movie? Uhmm...the best way is try and do both, no? All I know is, any piece using a photo of Kirsten Dunst as Marie-Antoinette (as she appears in Sofia Coppola's film) is an automatic turn-off. It doesn't open until 10.20, but Marie-Antoinette is already fixed in people's heads as this year's Memoirs of a Geisha...if that. It may do some business with young women who aren't that deep, and it'll probably pick up some tech nomninations (costumes, production, design, makeup).

Can you really compare the two movies? At least Sofia Coppola has a POV, as opposed to Rob Marshall. "Marie-Antoinette" isn't going to be aimed at young girls, not really -- they'd have better luck with cineastes. And I'd be shocked if the tech nominations didn't become wins...is there anything the Academy loves more in these categories than a glamorous historical drama?

Having seen Marie-Antoinette and being a big Sofia Coppola fan, it pains me to say that her film is so awful that I doubt it will be nominated in anything other than costumes. It's a shame and I was pissed at Wells for trashing the movie until I saw it myself and realized that he is 100% correct on this one.

You made up your mind that you were going to hate "Marie-Antoinette" long before you even saw it!
Just because someone has different taste from you, doesn't mean they are stupid or shallow as you like to suggest.

Just so we have proper context, the film does not look awful.
It looks jaw droppingly awful and vacuous.
