Nicholson Yankee hat

Jack Nicholson's fiendish Irish gangster in Martin Scorsese's The Departed "is so evil that he wears a Yankees hat on the streets of Boston. 'First of all, they wanted me to wear a Red Sox hat,' Nicholson grumbles, 'but I said, all things being equal, I don't want to." -- from Logan Hill's chat with Nicholson in the current New York magazine.

Yankees-Red Sox is so overrated, and SO 2002.

Ohio State-Michigan football, now THERE'S a heated rivalry. If Ohio State goes undefeated except for losing to Michigan, the people in Columbus will talk about firing the coach!

Rivalry, huh? Try Glendale-Kickapoo high schools
down here in Missouri. Now, THAT'S a rivalry.

NYC so 2002? The Yankees and Red Sox have been rivals longer than any of us have been alive.

You can always count on Jack to take a potentially interesting character and turn him into "Jack". Being from that part of Boston, I can tell you that none of those guys would wear a Yankee hat (never mind long greasy hair and a pink jacket).

Surprised Scorsese let him get away with this.

Jack is a fan of the Lakers, who's rival for ever so long (not really recent) are the Boston Celtics. So it makes sense for him to not like the Red Sox.

He doesn't have to be a "fan" of the Red Sox - he's playing a character! Have him wear no hat at all rather than one that makes no sense to the film.

mizerock, the Yankee's cap does make sense. A Bostoner, wearing a cap of the hated Yankees. Who's going to get in his face about it?

But Edward the point from the article was, Jack was mainly concerned that JACK didn't want to wear the hat. So he concocted an only mildly believable scenario for his character..

For someone who claims to be a total method actor he sure does bend a lot of his characters to fit his own mood.
