I ran into a Bobby disser yesterday afternoon at the "indie" publicist hotel, the Intercontinental. To be specific, he shrugged his shoulders, shook his head and kind of grimaced after mentioning that he'd seen it. The best thing about it, he said with some enthusiasm, is the archival footage of Robert F. Kennedy. The worst thing, he claimed, is Ashton Kutcher's performance as a late '60s hippy-dippy type.

I'm not surprised Kutcher gave a lame performance. I am shocked, however, that he was anything less than totally convincing as a "hippy-dippy" type. There is absolutely nothing in Kutcher's resume that indicates he will be anything other than the answer to a couple trivia questions five years hence.

Posted this perviously, but I'll mention this one last time: I've seen four legit reviews of the movie. Two were tepid, one was tepid to negative, the fourth was a rip of the picture. All said the best thing about it was the archival footage. Most said it suffered from a very weak script. People predisposed to like this movie in particular or this kind of movie - something pretending to be grand and full of meaning - will probably LIKE Bobby. Everybody else will probably, probably, be indifferent.

FYI, there's some newly posted and remarkable footage of that last night at the Ambassador Hotel available for viewing on Youtube. I just stayed up till 4 a.m. watching it. If Estevez's film comes close to that raw media footage, I'll be a sucker for it. But there are eight million ways to Sunday to fuck this story up, so I'm naturally skeptical of "Bobby." And I say this as a cat who's the only fan I know of "The War At Home." I'm not at all ashamed to admit this to a site that's recently been singing the praises of Phil Joanou's "Entropy," which easily makes my Ten Worst Movies list.
