DOAP in Toronto

Reuters guy Arthur Spiegelman went to last night's Toronto Film Festival premiere of Death of a President and has reported that it received a "short burst" of "mild applause from an audience that seemed more interested in how it was made than why." He also writes that "moviegers left with mixed feelings, with one American tourist calling it overhyped but interesting."

Producer-director Gabriel Range "complained there had been a rush to judgment about his film, spurred by both its subject matter and by a still photo from the movie that superimposed President George Bush's head on an actor being shot," Spiegelman writes. "Many of the questions for Range concerned how he managed to make the film so realistic and whether authorities in Chicago, where it was filmed, knew what he was doing."

That's the part that has me interested -- the purported realism of the footage. That's why I'm making Tueday's press screening come hell or high water.

DOAP "opens with demonstrations against Bush as he visits Chicago in 2007. As he leaves a hotel after delivering a speech, he is shot by a sniper in a nearby building. A police hunt leads to the arrest of a Palestinian man on flimsy evidence. Later the man is convicted of the assassination and kept in prison even as evidence points to another man as having committed the crime.

"Despite the sensationalism of its subject matter," Spiegelman observes, "the film tries to be a low-key and sober look at the effects of Bush's post 9/11 policies on U.S. society, especially on civil liberties."

"I hope we portrayed the horror of assassination," Range said. "There have been plenty of fictional films about assassination and I don't think anyone would get the idea of assassinating Bush from this film."

What I would find most interesting is if anyone actually claps in the audience when Bush is 'assasinated' on screen.

It would be pathetic of course, but I would be surprised if at least a few (if not more) did not.

This guy made a really good show about transport system failure in Britain. It was done very realistically so there is no reason (at this point) to doubt that this will be too. Sounds like a really interesting idea to explore but they can''t deny that it isn't controversial and that they weren't looking for headlines and attention.

It isn't really even about how realistic the film is, or the intentions of the filmmakers. I can't read their minds, so one can never know.

It's the simple yet undeniable truth that much of Europe and indeed England see Bush as equivalent to Bin Laden or Hitler, and thus would certainly be happy to see him killed. My guess would be that many of the posters on this board wish for the same thing, and like Cindy Sheehan, wouldn't even deny it. Read the comments section of any left-wing blog site.

The filmmakers, according to The Drudge Report, have private security at TIFF because they've received death threats. I'm not surprised, and I frankly don't care. They know, deep down, that they made this film to appeal to those who have private or not-so-secret death wishes for an American President.

The movie is not sleazy exploitation or a gimmick film. It's a compelling -- and sometimes unnerving -- mock-documentary that plays out like a "Dateline" report, complete with re-enactments and creepy electronically tweaked footage that makes it look like Cheney is reading Bush's eulogy, etc. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was intelligent and absorbing and it definitely does not encourage anyone to shoot leaders they disagree with. The consequences of the assassination are grim indeed and expose all the things people dread about the misuse of the Patriot Act and other such "security measures." Also, some of the press people who were at the screening Sunday night behaved abominably, trying to shout over audience members who were trying to ask questions and generally giving Noah Cowan (who handled everything with admirable professionalism) a very difficult time. The worst ones had British and Australian accents, just in case someone thinks they were "ugly Americans."

I'm sure you want to believe that, but any film that uses a realistic mock assasination of George Bush, to indict and critique America and George Bush (ie. they brought it on themselves) cannot really be anything other than sleazy and gimmicky.

It's like using real actors to perform real sex and then say you are not shooting pornography.

Sure you are...you just have a bigger budget.

Sorry, Nicol, but D.O.A.P. is not about "they brought it on themselves," although I'm sure many of these op/ed people who've been writing about the film without seeing it are certain that's what it must be. It's not a movie about placing blame; it's about radical actions leading to dire consequences. (And there's a difference between sex scenes and pornography that extends beyond budgets, by the way.) Anyhow, for those who haven't already condemned the film without bothering to see it, you may now get a chance since Newmarket supposedly closed a deal for the rights to it.

Sure, I'll deny it. Much of Europe, England, and the US has no use for Bush, but you don't appear to have any idea beyond your own fantasies whether they want to see him killed or not.

And I have read the comments sections of plenty of both left-wing and right-wing blogs. You occasionally, as in rarely, have some fool who would like to see Bush dead on the left-wing blogs. But the vast majority would like to see the media and the other branches of government do their jobs for a change. Plenty would like to see him impeached, but that's not anything like wanting to see him dead.

You haven't read the comments at left-wing blogs. You're just making shit up out of your own head.

Sex...pornography...we do have our obsessions, don't we?

How about a digitally tweaked, porn-mockumentary about what might have transpired during one of those nights when Jeff Gannon, intrepid White House reporter and male "escort," checked into the White House and didn't sign out until the next morning? You could post ads on Freerepublic and sell a few hundred thousand DVDs--mailed in plain brown wrappers, of course.

I saw it at the Toronto screening, and it really is leftie masturbation fodder, through and through. The moonbat left will be playing the assassination scene as their screen-saver.

It's a really offensive film - aside from the incredibly distasteful subject matter, it whines on about fantastically imagined infringements of rights while utterly ignoring the real effects (pro and con) of Bush's foreign policies. It's solely motivated (gotta love the disingenuous comments to the contrary by the filmmakers) by the cum shot of showing someone they hate murdered, rationalized in their fantasies about why their titallation is justified because of their childish perceptions of American foreign policy.

I will say the technical aspects of the film are surprisingly solid - the scenes look real, which of course is the point of the porn. I'm used to film festivals being dominated by crazy lefties, but this is just further evidence of the ridiculous trend film has taken into representing an extremist minority perspective -- I was pleasantly surprised that even most of the very liberal, very anti-American Canadian audience seemed unhappy with the film's pretence and delivery.

But if this is the path independent film is headed, I guess I'll abandon my annual festival trips to Sundance and Toronto -- they're no longer producing introducing character dramas or films about the human condition - they're instead producing infantile leftie circle jerk political films.

The awesome eptiome of how the festival has devolved in when the Borat film (one of the flicks I was most anticipating) was cancelled mid-showing and replaced by a monologue from Michael Moore - that's right out of Dante's journey, for christ's sake.

"fantastically imagined infringements of rights"

Words from someone who hasn't yet experienced the heavy bootheel of the Federal gov't kicking in the door.

Do you agree that the government has the right to seize property without due process from, say, a casual marijuana smoker? I'll bet someone like you does. The War on (some) Drugs was opening the salvo in the quest to gut the Bill of Rights. The Patriot Act, ready to go only days after 9/11 (and passed in the middle of the night) is the next step.

And what exactly are the "pro" aspects of the Bush foreign policy? Professionally inept? Hardly: These neocons are attempting to destabilize the Middle East, not spread Democracy.

Who has? I'd like to hear the documented fact that anyone in this country has had any law enforcement WHATSOEVER pay them a visit about phone calls they've made (not including, of course, Islamic fundamentalists)

The NSA monitors phone calls coming in INTERNATIONALLY only, and ONLY if they are suspected to come from a verified Al-Qaeda source.

Bush doesn't care about you libs and your library books or your phone calls about hemp and gay sex. It's just become a lie and a scare tactic, fear-mongering to win political points on a corrupt, leftist ideology. And it'll be exposed.

There are accounts aplenty about the Feds infiltrating peace activist groups, harrassing protesters, etc. That may not satisfy nycbusybody's definitions of rights being infringed, but then again people like nycbusybody don't care about maintaining the American way of life--only making points on entertainment blogs.

If you think all that hooey about NSA not listening to domestic calls is true, you sir (or madam--are nycbusybody and nicoled the same person?) are living in a fantasy world.

Harrassing protesters? What does that even mean?

And until someone offers real, hard evidence that the NSA listens to domestic calls, it's you who are living in a fantasy world. Paranoia is a common trait of the looney left, though, so it's not surprising.

And all politicians use scare tactics, liberals are just historically better at it (claims that millions of Americans would starve in the streets if Clinton/Gingrich's welfare reform passed...Congressional Democrats actually said that). With Bush, though, Republicans got better at it.

Fight fire with fire.

This movie is just the latest example of leftie death-porn: http://michellemalkin.com/archives/005841.htm

How can they be surprised that their views aren't treated seriously, when they consistently act like juvenile delinquents? Or that they even understand, let alone care about, fundamental "american values" like freedom of speech when they consistently throw tantrums to drown out speeches from individuals with "disagreeable" political views.

As always, the dichotomy between the right/left is best characterized as the adults on the right, who are capable of recognizing and seriously addressing issues, and the children on the left, who whine and impotently mope about largely imagined or frivolous "wrongs" while struggling violently to comprehend the world we live in.
