Range on "DOAP"

Gabriel Range's Death of a President, which screens tonight in Toronto, "does not take the assassination of [George] Bush as the premise for entertainment," the 32 year-old director tells Toronto Star critic Peter Howell. "It's the starting point for what I hope are some quite serious reflections on these extraordinary times we live in." Here's the piece, which apparently is the first significant interview that Range has given about the film.

Fox news is all but apeshit over this. Their reporter in Toronto, Steve Brown, dragged out Roger Friedman in Toronto to plug a review he'll have up tonight around 11 e.s.t. Question. Is RF the only one in Toronto in a suit and tie? They both looked navy to me, in case you were wondering.

The director should have gone with the impeachment of George Bush instead. Now there is a real premise for entertainment. Fire up the popcorn!

And with 30% of the American public backing the impeachment of George Bush in the most recent CNN poll (higher than any percentage that ever backed impeaching Clinton, whom Congress actually did impeach), the filmmaker missed out on a large sure-fire audience for impeachment:

Even I, who loathed Bush long before loathing Bush was cool, have trouble getting interested in a film that takes his assassination as its starting point. It would have to offer something extraordinary beyond its sensational premise.

I also have to ask myself how I'd feel if it were a president I liked or at least felt was marginally worth defending whose face was digitally imposed on a fictional assassination scene. Even for the Worst President Ever I'd find it offensive if Range presents the assassination as anything less than a national horror.

I'm inclined to think it's not as big a deal as using lies presented as facts to assassinate the character of a president, the way ABC's Path to 9/11 apparently does.

By the way, if that 30% in favor of impeachment weren't damaging enough, the CNN poll also says that 57% of the respondents said they think it would be good for the country "if the Democrats in Congress were able to conduct official investigations into what the Bush administration has done in the past six years."

That makes 30% in favor of impeachment now, and another 27% who are probably willing to come around after some proper investigation, if it ever happens. Congress and the media are far, far behind the public on this.

The entire US political system is in the doldrums right now. There are some bright and committed people on both sides but they're becoming more and more scarce. It's going to take a lot more than a possibly inflammatory documentary to spur the public into action. It's going to take a lot of hard work and frankly I'm not so sure the American public has got it in them anymore. We're a major power that is looking like it's started it's gradual (but eventually absolute) decline.
