Bad cards

Farrah Fawcett's been dealt some bad cards. I'd say something comforting, but that's not the spirit. Grim up, fight it out, kick it down.

Personally, I have great sympathy for her. Cancer is a challenge at any age (I faced it four years ago) and at 59, I'm sure she must be terrified of the toll the surgery and the chemotherapy may take on her body. The woman certainly has been dealt some bad cards -- terrible advice from her managers back in the CHARLIE'S ANGELS days that almost torpedoed her career, a relationship with James Orr that was reportedly full of violence, ill-advised plastic surgery, public ridicule for her spaced-out appearances on TV, etc. -- but she's tried to stay in the game. Watching a bunch of those old ANGELS episodes recently for a DVD review I was once again struck by what a sweet, funny presence she was back in the '70s, even before she really knew much about acting. And once she found her footing, she delivered terrific performances in THE BURNING BED, EXTREMITIES, BETWEEN TWO WOMEN and SMALL SACRIFICES. Regardless of how things have gone in the years since, she's an icon of an era and I wish her nothing but the best.
