City of ghosts

"The Daisy on Rodeo Dr., the MLK diner on Wilshire Blvd. where we all used to go at 2 in the morning, the Luau on the corner -- they're all gone. All the time I'm passing places that were part of my history here but they're not there now. I'm walking down the street and seeing things and people that only I can see. The town is full of ghosts for me. Frank Sinatra was a friend. Fred Astaire, Danny Kaye...they're no longer here." -- The Prestige costar Michael Caine speaking to the Toronto Star's John Hiscock, and posted three bloody days ago.

"And the bloody traffic — it's a nightmare. It used to be like a little country town here but now the traffic is terrible."

Preach it, brother!

harlan ellison wrote one of the very best pieces about la's long dead night royalty in a piece about the famed "daisy" club. he tells a fantastic story about betting aaron spelling he could get a membership card and then eviserates the daisy chain as a discoteque of death...

but yo michael, there are still living places to go to where you don't have to have a membership card to get into...

Speaking of Ellison, I tracked down Pink's on a trip to L.A. because it figures so prominently in one of his stories (I think it's called Prince Mishkin, Hold the Relish, in Angry Candy). It's become incredibly overexposed, due to its appearance in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue and the Joey opening, but the hot dogs are still terrific. I wish the owners success, but I sure hope it doesn't go the Nathan's route...

Really? I can't stand Pink's. Yet, I admit every time I drive past it there's a long line.

Yeah, the only time I've been in LA (a couple years ago now), I went to Pinks, and the line was minimal. Probably because we went mid-afternoon. Good hot dogs to be sure.

all i can think when i pass that eternal line at pinks is "lessee, two dollars for a ten pack of hot dogs, two bucks for a can of chili and they're making about ten thousand dollars a day. fuck this screenwriting shit!"
