New York Observer reporter Sara Vilkomerson reports that "more than a few guests dismissed Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette" at last week's opening-night party for the N.Y. Film Festival. "It's like sticking your hand in a giant meringue. Mark my words, no one will see it but gays and girls."

I'm neither gay or a girl and I thought "Devil Wears Prada" was a pile of crap. (it was like "Sex in the City", except without an interesting female lead or all that boring funny stuff)
btw
Would anyone else be suprised to drive down a street in Hollywood in the next few weeks and see Jeffrey (as in Wells) pulling down bus stop posters for "Marie Antoinette", stomping up and down on them and then setting them on fire?
("Lousy Sophia Coppola movie! Stupid Marie Antoinette! I HATE you! I HATE you! I HATE you!........buy Kingdom of Heaven, now on DVD!")

Actually, James, you're being both misogynistic and homophobic. For what I said to be an insult to either group, you'd have to be proposing that either group is a bad thing to be.
Which I wasn't. I was merely remarking upon their similarity. But if it's homophobic to point out that gays are effeminate men, what you're in effect saying is that being feminine is a bad thing.
You're probably racist too. Leers always are.

Besides, I have several gay friends who say any gay man who doesn't act effeminately is insecure about his homosexuality, thus trying to make it "straight", and hide it.
Assuming homophobia is caused by some sort of hormonal or chromosomal imbalance, why shouldn't it biologically lead to a more effeminate male? I think it's both homophobic and misogynistic to suggest that there's something wrong with effeminate men in the first place. I certainly didn't.

How is it a stereotype to say most gay men are effeminate? I never equated "effeminate" with "flaming". I just observed that most gay men, biologically of course, have a tendency to be effeminate. If you see effeminate as a bad word, you're the one to be felt sorry for.
Sounds like you're a little ashamed of your homosexuality, Bob. Let your freak flag fly. Pride in yourself, my man.

I'm offended that I have to even state this, but I believe homosexuality is the cause of a chemical process that makes the average gay men have more estrogen, or feminine traits, than the average straight man. Obviously science hasn't pinpointed this yet, but it's certainly not a "choice", or a "moral failing" or a "psychological perversion", as most actual homophobes claim.
When I said, "what's the difference between gays and girls?", I was actually just refraining a common, lighthearted joke one of my very gay coworkers often tells, and he happens to be a dear friend of mine.
If you, Bob, are so paranoid that anyone who observes the obvious, empirical fact that most gay men have more effeminate traits (by this, I am not referring to "flaming" drag queen traits, but simple things like manner of walking, tone of voice) is homophobic, then you're fighting the wrong battle, man.

I still see no one telling me specifically what I said untrue about homosexuality. It's biological, it's not a choice, and it leads gay men to be, on average, more effeminate than a straight man. I think most gay men are proud of this, understand the evolution behind it, and don't consider it a stereotype. To deny it seems ludicrous to me, and guided by an irrational and almost heterophobic fear.
If you're gay and not as effeminate as others, wonderful. The chemical process didn't hit as hard. Doesn't mean you're any less gay than a more effeminate one, nor should you be less proud. But when I saw the gay pride parade in NYC, there wasn't one float of straight-looking, average-Joe types - it's not exactly the image gay groups are pushing here - the gay men themselves seemed proud of their culture, and wanted to flaunt it. And I admired that.

Did we forget we were discussing a film? Amazing how many opinions there are on films almost no one has seen.
I have seen Antoinette- and it is like cotton candy, but I enjoyed it more than Jeff W. It has a dreamy, etheral quality about it. The sets are sumptuous and the costumes terrific. Will girls like it more than boys? Probably yes. But it has no 100mill potential. It's like a study in close up of someone utterly oblivious- and not that fascinating.

Is it possible you really believe this?
NYCBB, you've lived in New York about 15 minutes but we've all been treated to your opinions about West Side liberals, people on the #7 train, racism in Brooklyn (which you've decided is mostly white-on-black), etc., etc., all of which you obviously know nothing about. Now you instruct us as to the nature of gay men judging by your once seeing the Gay Pride parade. That's like saying blacks have an inherently greater propensity for violence and crime by looking at Riker's Island. Or inherently less intelligence by looking at their IQ scores. As a black man yourself, perhaps you have the equivalant "scientific" theories on racial differences? Maybe you'd share those with us too?
You're like a 13 yr. old with his first computer. You leave negative post after negative post. And if I remember correctly, the only positive one you've left was about a shallow, slick, media-driven hack like Barack Obama (and I'm a liberal). And what did you like about him? His "likeability." Thanks for another deep insight.
