Economy Is Up

Happiness and lethargy are merely flip sides of the same coin. People who go "whoopee" when things are going well and "woe is me" when things are going badly are slaves in a jungle of illusion. There is only the cosmic hum and continuity of it all.

That is why people who spray champagne on their friends and scream "we're number one!" when their football or soccer or baseball or basketball teams wins are cosmic midgets. And why this front-page story that appeared in the Times this afternoon will only excite or encourage children.

It reads, "After days of flirting with its all-time peak, the Dow Jones industrial average finally set a new record this afternoon. The Dow gained 56.99 points, or 0.5 percent, to close at 11,727.34. The index’s previous closing high of 11,722.98 was set on Jan. 14, 2000.

"The latest record came as oil prices fell about 3 percent and dropped below $60 a barrel for the first time since March. Energy prices have been falling in the last month because fears of hurricanes, troubles in the Middle East and tight supplies have eased markedly since the end of summer.

"Earlier today, the Dow topped another record reached on Jan. 14, 2000, as it traded at an all-time intraday high of 11,758.87. The stock market rally that led to the 2000 peak had been fueled by growth in technology and a belief that the internet would transform businesses. The rally over the last few months, however, has had more modest roots: signs that the economy is moderating and inflation is tame."

Today, America stands at a crossroads.

The Dow Industrial Average is trading at an all-time, dangerous high.

The nation's unemployment rate holds steady at 4.6%, and dozens of Americans are without work.

More Americans own homes than ever before, creating substandard, hand-to-mouth living conditions for the nation's apartment managers and slumlords.

Middle class tax cuts have given most Americans more money than they know what to do with. The result? Ugly Bluetooth cell phones sticking out of people's ears, and the rise of a dangerous new generation of Elmo dolls, TMX Elmo.

Finally, low gas prices spell even more danger for Mother Earth. As the unnatural lack of hurricanes this season proves, global warming is a bigger threat than ever.

What can the average American do in these uncertain times?

The answer is simple.

They can vote for change. They can vote Democrat.

Today's new and improved Democratic party can end the dangerous and risky stock boom. They can bring the price of your home down, so that even the least fortunate American can afford to buy it. They can increase the price of gas and save Mother Earth. And of course, they can raise taxes on all Americans so no Americans can afford Bluetooth again.

And, perhaps most importantly, returning Congress to Democrats will ensure that the urban cores of our greatest cities - New York, Philadelphia, Boston, San Francisco - will be quickly and efficiently rebuilt after al Queda destroys them with dirty bombs and backpack nukes.

So this November, just say "Hell no!" to the risky Republican policies that have brought us to the brink of unknown and uncharted economic territory.

Vote Democrat, and return us to the good old days, when enlightened minds like Jimmy Carter steered our great nations economic and foreign policy, and Bill Clinton gave us moral codes any American could follow. Remember, there's nothing wrong with having some fun with an intern as long as she's 19 years old.

Vote Democrat and together we can all find out what "Blue America" really means.

"The nation's unemployment rate holds steady at 4.6%,"

Too bad most of the people being employed by American corporations are in China and India.

"More Americans own homes than ever before, creating substandard, hand-to-mouth living conditions for the nation's apartment managers and slumlords."

Actually, most Americans don't really own houses per se as much as are hoping their adjustable mortgage rates don't screw them over when the boom
finally corrects itself soon. Ironically, more people buying houses has actually led to less Americans being able to afford them, because the houses are being co-opted by speculators as part of a dangerous shell game that only those who have the collateral are willing to risk.

"Middle class tax cuts have given most Americans more money than they know what to do with."

Of course, you're calculating before inflation costs.

"Finally, low gas prices spell even more danger for Mother Earth."

Yep. It just means more people supporting terrorists instead of saving energy.

"As the unnatural lack of hurricanes this season proves, global warming is a bigger threat than ever."

You don't really need hurricanes as an indicator to know that temperatures are on the rise and glaciers are quite the opposite.

"And, perhaps most importantly, returning Congress to Democrats will ensure that the urban cores of our greatest cities - New York, Philadelphia, Boston, San Francisco - will be quickly and efficiently rebuilt after al Queda destroys them with dirty bombs and backpack nukes."

At least that's a better prospect than what Bush is currently doing for New Orleans after Katrina.

"Vote Democrat, and return us to the good old days, when enlightened minds like Jimmy Carter steered our great nations economic and foreign policy,"

At least Carter stopped a war between two Middle Eastern countries. And the economic crisis was technically the mess he inherited from Nixon and Ford.

"and Bill Clinton gave us moral codes any American could follow."

Yes, going after perpetrators of terrorist attacks
instead of using the attacks to start senseless wars is pretty admirable.

"The Dow Jones Industrial Average hit a record high today: 11,727 -- four points higher than the previous record, set January 14, 2000. So if you invested $1,000 in the 30 companies in the Dow six years and almost nine months ago, you'd have $1000.34 today!

But, alas, if you invested that same amount in the S&P 500 Index (which in the winter of 2000 was bubbliciously full of tech stocks) you'd have only $910.56, and if you "invested" it in the companies in the Nasdaq Composite (the souffle of '90s equity indices) you'd have just $552.04.

Now, doesn't that make you feel better about the economy?

(Full disclosure: The dollar amounts above are actually a little light, since they don't include dividends. On the other hand, they also don't include fees, commissions and other investment expenses. In any case, I think you probably get the idea -- taking almost 7 years to get back to where you started isn't exactly something to brag about.)"

michael, for your learning pleasure from october 4, 2006:

"(CBS) The National Rifle Association gave thousands of dollars last month to Colorado state legislators in an effort to defeat gun control laws inspired by the Columbine massacre. CBS News Correspondent Vince Gonzales reports many of those measures were voted down this week.

Only a few token laws, those supported by the NRA, passed. One allows cops to arrest people who buy guns for criminals and children; another re-authorizes a state background check program.

Most of the other proposals were shot down. Among other things, these laws required background checks at gun shows, safe storage of guns at home and an increase in the age for buying a handgun from 18 to 21."

now, tell me why gun owners -- who have no problem with unconstitutional wiretapping -- scream about liburals appeasing terrorists. well, the trrorists know where to find weapons when they want them: wal-mart.

and dear NYC, my name is christian, not anti-christian. unlike your party, i actually try to follow christ's wise tenets, the ones you seem to hold as liberal weakness, like:

Resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to
him the other also. [Matthew 5:39]

which clearly goes against your bad ass ways of vengeance...

Watch out! Be on your guard against all
kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions. [Luke 12.15.]

unless you're the wall street journal or donald trump...

oh, and here's one your party seems to ignore as often as possible:

Thou shalt not kill [Matthew 5:21]

so please tell me why jesus hates america.

And also, your little demonizing diatribe against the NRA didn't answer the question at all. The article you posted quotes these as being the laws the NRA fought against:

"background checks at gun shows, safe storage of guns at home and an increase in the age for buying a handgun from 18 to 21."

Which of those has anything to do with a 33 year old walking into an Amish schoolhouse, with a gun he may not have bought at a gun show, and if he had a prior perfectly clean record?

I have merely made the observation that after all the finger-pointing and blame placing, the Dems are finally going to be in a position where they can actually take action and fix all these problems. And I can't wait to see it. Will Nancy Pelosi's first act as majority leader be: a) to seek a resolution setting a timetable for withdrawing from Iraq; b) to propose legislation seeking additional funding for the reconstruction of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast; c) to propose legislation promoting the use of alternative energy sources; d) to form a committee to examine implementation of universal health care, or e) to call for an independent prosecutor to investigate wrongdoing by the administration. You mean the kind of ethics which allowed women to be tried and executed as witches and black people to be considered sub-human enough to be enslaved?

"The majority of pro-life people in this country (many of whom are women) don't even begin to see the abortion issue as having anything to do with women's rights. You either believe a human fetus is life, or you don't."

Of course, as soon as it's born, that fetus can still be tried and executed for murder in states like Texas.

"And boy, if I've ever heard a more despicable demonization of the United States Armed Forces, I don't think I can remember it, unless it was Sean Penn or Jane Fonda."

They army demonizes itself with its refusal to give troops proper equipment and its use of banned chemical weapons on civilian populations.

Michael: "christian, exactly what gun restriction that wasn't implemented would have prevented what happened at that school? Can you even hint at one?"

A psychological evaluation of the buyer would have been nice.

Also from http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/10/04/national/main2060562.shtml
: "Using a checklist that was later found in his pickup truck, Roberts brought to the school three guns, a stun gun, two knives, a pile of wood for barricading the doors, and a bag with 600 rounds of ammunition, police said."

I'd normally be suspicious of anyone who buys that much ammo, wouldn't you?

FACT CHECK: Bush Slashed Funding For School Violence Prevention

In the past few weeks, the nation has been stunned by the rash of school shootings in Colorado, Wisconsin, and at an Amish schoolhouse in Pennyslvania. President Bush said he was saddened and deeply concerned about the shootings and plans to convene a summit of education and law enforcement experts to discuss federal action that can help communities prevent violence.

Bushs rhetoric doesnt match his record. He has consistently recommended pulling funding for school violence prevention programs:

In 2006, Bush proposed a five percent cut for youth and crime prevention programs. Bushs 2005 budget proposed a 40 percent drop in juvenile-crime prevention, following a 44 percent cut in 2004.

The Bush administration has repeatedly recommended eliminating federal funding for the Safe and Drug-Free Schools
and Communities State Grants program, which works on juvenile-crime prevention.

Since 2001, Congress has voted to retain the Grants program over the administrations objections, but at reduced levels. Funding for the program was $439.2 million in 2001 but fell to $346.5 million this year, with $310 million recommended for 2007.

More than half the nations school districts receive $10,000 or less per year to fight violence and substance abuse too little to make a difference according to an Education Department official.

His traveling companion was arrested immediately when a search of his luggage revealed bomb-making manuals. Because the INS holding cells were overcrowded, Yousef was released with instructions to come back a month later for a hearing. D'oh!
Yousef traveled around New York and New Jersey, immediately contacting a cell of Islamic Jihad operatives loyal to the notorious blind Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, a controversial extremist Muslim preacher who had been granted entree to the country by the CIA (which had hoped to befriend him). D'oh! D'oh!..."

Also, if you want to be technical, Clinton was only sworn in a month before the first WTC attack, so he was probably still putting together his cabinet. Bush had six months to respond.

"Ah, Min, who two posts ago said the GOP hates women, uses the phrases "dumb cunt" and "jizz rag" to refer to me, as a woman."

Well insulting them is certainly a step up from bombing them.

"I'm sure Jesus would have a problem with this, as does every other American and proud serviceman who know that the actions of an evil few don't equate the entire group."

Yes, and Mai Lai was also an isolated case, just like Auschwitz.

"And, of course, in America, these evil people are punished."

You mean by giving them a few years in jail if they're well-connected, and time off for good behavior?

christian: "but i'm sure you'll be unhappy to know that my traitorous republican father had to sue the us government for them to finallly admit that, oh yeah, we did spray youse guys with agent orange."

You think he had it bad? You should see some of the photos of deformed Vietnamese children of sprayed farmers who we were trying to "liberate", but whom we refuse to compensate for their suffering. You should be glad if your dad can still even have the strength to go to court, because some of those poor bastards would probably only be able to find work in a jar at the circus. Oh well, science has no place in dictating the existence of evolution, global warming, and the Gulf War Syndrome.

Don't quite understand, Min, how I was wrong? If the Bush Administration's budget indeed contains cuts for school violence protection, I would say, yes, I might want to take a look at that. Although, of course, most of the above says FEDERAL funding, as opposed to state funding, which is where such things belong, as I'm sure Bush would agree.

Be that as it may, I'm the one who suggested arming a guard at every school door. Is Thinkprogress.com agreeing with me, then, that Bush isn't doing enough to support that? That'd be cool!

Yes, New Orleans was certainly able to take care of itself without federal funding which goes to killing people instead of universal health care.

If ever a thread existed to justify the Republican claims that leftists actually DO believe the American military are the murderers, and not the terrorists, this does it. Kerry may object, but I suspect DZ et al. represent more of the liberal mindset in this country than the moderate Dems let on.

They're only terrorists when they're not working for us.

And how many people would you turn in (bare false witness), ala Pinochet's Chile, to reach your comfort level?

You are really stupid and one of the dumbest right-wing cunts on the planet. And who is to believe that you have any honor?

Read it here first and weep left-os - rising dow, cheap gas, incredibly low unemployment all spell GOP retention of congress in 2006.

Oh, and Drudge is saying Foley had IMsex with an 18 y.o - consensual and not remotely illegal. ABC lied. What's with all the leftwing gaybashing?

What a hoot. The left is in freefall. You guys will pick up a few seats here and there, maybe do us a favor and get rid of that moron Santorum, and it will be spun as the biggest dem defeat since, oh, 2004.

well NYC, i never claimed to not like you. i'm always glad to have open debates. one of the reasons i love this country, dontcha know.

liberals know terrorists are bad, jesus. but we're supposed to be better. that's the starting point for winning a war on terror. kerry, unlike bush or cheney, voluntarily faced combat for america. and your "support the troops" party called his purple heart bullshit. which reveals as much about the conservative mindset.

and i don't like the name calling from the left anymore than the right. but it's time to wake up.

uh, what movie were we talking about?

americanrat: Drudge is a liar like all Republicans. And gas prices are still insanely higher than they were before Bush stole the presidency. The guy just got all the oil companies to take a hit for the election, and will jack everything up if the Republicans retain a majority. Finally, employment is still not high enough to keep up with lay-offs or with demand. The Dems will not only win, but set the Repugs back from winning for decades, if ever, unless Diebold has its way.

"a liar like all Republicans"

I sometimes wonder why political debate in this country has degraded so much. Thanks for contributing to the cause, jackass.

"I suspect DZ et al. represent more of the liberal mindset in this country than the moderate Dems let on."

At least this shows that it isn't one side's fault, so thanks for that.

Thanks for co-opting the cause by being a Republican-lite.

Yes, if it weren't for those damn communists, Hitler would have won the war, too.
