Esquire tease

That "Sexist Woman Alive" tease over the last five issues of Esquire, consisting of staffer A.J. Jacobs interviewing "an enigmatic trailer-park temptress" who turned out to be Scarlett Johansson, was one of the boring and infuriating wank-offs in monthly magazine history. I got more and more angry with each new installment, and now that it's over I feel like throwing the latest issue across the room.

Esquire did the same thing last year with Jessica Biel, fine. Jacobs gives credit to Johansson for coming up with the idea of her portraying a trailer trash girl...brilliant. I hated this idea, hated this idea...hated it. On top of which Johansson has always seemed a tiny bit common. Nothing wrong with obviousness but commonality -- i.e, indications of serfs and peons in the family tree -- has a way of dimming the candle.

Uh Jeff, they do that every year...it's over the course of 6 issues every year that they reveal a little bit of the sexiest woman alive for that year...last year it was Jessica Biel and they revealed her feet first and then a different section until finally we find out that it's Jessica Biel. There's little clues and whatnot. I don't mind the concept of it, it's entertaining, I just disagree that Biel or Scarlett are the sexiest women alive. But, maybe I'm in the minority there.

Yes, it's a tedious tease, but don't blame Scarlett. As Noah points out, Esquire did the same thing last year with Jessica Biel.

Frankly, to say someone is the "sexiest women alive," Esquire would have had to consider all living women, even the ones in Kazakhstan. I don't believe they're really doing that.

It's clear that "Scarlett's idea" was to portray the "trailer-park temptress." You CAN blame her for that.

The problem is, if you're going to call someone the "sexiest woman alive", no one will ever agree on who it should be. Besides, every men magazine out there has something similar and it's not because Esquire is more "prestigious" that it's less stupid than when Maxim or FHM does it.

does esquire have any credibility about most of the things it pimps on the cover? didn't it put jessica simpson up there at some some point? all these bland blonde jessicas get confusing...

Hmmm, Jeff, you actually wrote "Sexist Woman Alive," not sexiest. The psychology undergrad in me is struggling not to draw conclusions.
