The previous Peter Howell/Flags of Our Fathers/Hannibal- at-the-gates piece will suffice if you want to post something about Clint Eastwood's film, but it would be really interesting to get as many reactions as possible about Flags. What people do and say this weekend in response to this film will, I think, largely decide if it becomes a Best Picture nominee.

"Flags" was far from perfect, and like Welles, I think the script's structure was a lot of the problem. I have a great deal of respect for the source, and this may have influenced my reaction. That being said, it was still a deeply affecting film in spite of its flaws. Eastwood took his time, layering the scenes, and in the end, creating a kind of emotional painting, where the overall impact was achieved from the accumulation of the images, small and large, quiet and loud. Best Picture: absolutely.

I couldn't disagree more. I went expecting a great film and what I got was a so-so war movie and a so-so drama, neither one of which got above the emotional punch line that they needed to. I was very disapointed in the overall effect, while moments (mere moments) achieved some level of greatness, they were far to few to add up. In fact, during an extended "death-scene" moment in the middle of the film, it became very silly as one death scene became another and then another and then another. Beautifully shot, amazingly effected, woefully edited, strangely unemotional and largely boring. How could this be?
