Classe tous risques (The Criterion Collection, 6.17.2008) Claude Sautet is best known for subtle interpretations of French bourgeois life in such films as Un coeur en hiver and Nelly & Monsieur Arnaud. Yet the director began his career with genre films. Classe Tous Risques, released in 1960, is considered the best of his early work and it's a fascinating companion to similar crime movies made around the same time by Jean-Pierre Melville. Here for the record is a list of "The Friends of United 93" -- myself plus Toronto Star critic Peter Howell (who gave it 5 points on MCN's Gurus of Gold chart), Sasha Stone (7 points), Lou Lumenick (8 points), Anne Thompson (9 points) and Susan Wloszczyna (10 points). There are no friends of United 93 among Tom O'Neil's "Buzzmeter" forecasters at The Envelope. Joiners?

Friends of Utter Mediocrity.

Friends of Atrocious Amateur-Hour Acting.

Friends of Only the Most Literal Interpretation of Events Humanly Possible. (AKA "The Dullards")

Friends of Sub-Literate "verite" Style Filmmaking that Might as Well Have Been Directed by Christopher Guest.

Friends of Paul Haggis.

I was going to easily dismiss P. Vice's remarks as 'not getting it' until that last comment, which is pretty much the most insulting thing that could be written about this movie; plus it's incredibly, obviously, wrong, because the movie has no trite melodrama, no obvious overacting, no easy limo-liberal sentiments.

I therefore assume P. Vice hasn't seen the movie.

Yeah, that P. Vice post is hilarious. Why the hate? I mean, I guess I can understand people not responding to the movie but to hate it that much? Somebody has issues. But I do have to say that if the film WAS directed by Christopher Guest, it makes me chuckle to imagine Eugene Levy as one of the hijackers. Catherine O'Hara and Parker Posey as the flight attendants. Christopher Guest given the line "Let's roll." P. Vice, while trying to be a mean little prick, actually stumbled onto something funny totally by accident.
