Jamie Stuart #4

The latest Jamie Stuart New York Film Festival video is mainly about hair -- i.e., Stuart's sparse Soderberghian thatch vs. the angular, abundant topside forest that has always been a component with David Lynch, director of the NYFF-screened Inland Empire . Stuart doesn't get into how the the film plays, what others seemed to think of it, or the whys and wherefores of Lynch's decision to self-distribute it.

The thing about Lynch, Inland Empire and everything surrounding it...is that it doesn't mean anything. David Lynch is going to do what David Lynch wants to do. Watch his movies. They're the contents of his head without much thought to what anybody else thinks.

That's what his self-distribution is about. He's cutting the conversation off at the ankles.

Is the movie too long? Yes. Will he change it? No. I personally liked what he was up do, in terms of form and aesthetics, a lot of people didn't. I don't think it's going to change who goes to see it. Lynch has a hardcore following and they'll see it regardless. So going blue with debate about the movie is ultimately a waste of energy.

Instead it seemed a worthy pursuit on my part to make something similarly personal, though obviously accessible. It was about the change of time, using Lynch's talk about film being dead as the centerpiece. The clips that frame the piece are from a short film I did in early '96 called "Big City," which beside showing off my mohawk was shot on film in 16mm. There's also the old photos, etc.

So, it's not exactly about Lynch's hair, per se. It's more a metaphor for personal expression.
