Hey Joe

I used to live on a second floor of a home in the Hollywood hills, on Franklin Avenue, and my landlord, believe it or not, was Mitch Mitchell, the frizzy-haired, British-born drummer for the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain has put me into a Hendrix receptivity realm for the last couple of days, and one result is that I've recently come across this "Hey Joe" track that's almost all Mitch's drums and Noel Redding's bass.

It's a countdown to Jimi's birthday on the 27th! I would still take the original "Hey Joe" though with the opening guitar.

I am proud to say I share the same birthday as Jimi Hendrix. It's also the same birthday as Bruce Lee.

Not sure how to break this to you, Jeffrey, but this is most likely a fake.

Sure, it might be Mitchell on drums and Redding on bass grooving to "Hey Joe" but this can't possibly be the actual rhythm tracks from the 1969 Hendrix recording for one specific reason... the toms are distinctly recorded in stereo and sound like they were close-mic'ed, which means a minimum of 8 tracks for drums/bass. Back when the record was made, there were 3 and 4 track machines mostly, and the thought of taking up more than 2 tracks for drums was unheard of. Toms were rarely close-mic'ed until much later.

Chances are that this is a recording done much later and not the original rhythm track, though since I don't have a copy of the song, I can't compare the two for other distinctions that would be a giveaway. (Though I hear a few timing issues that probably would distinguish this as a recording done later.)
