I could do a mass e-mailing of the New York film publicist community, but I might as well use this space to announce that Hollywood Elsewhere will be trolling the streets of Manhattan and Brooklyn starting this Friday and throughout the rest of the month. Looking very much forward to (i.e., close to panting for) that very specific New York action and energy, along with the blessed wearing of scarves and overcoats.

It is going to be in the mid 60s most of the week. Very warm November and same expected in December. Al Roker said so, and he knows. Global warming baby. People skating in Woolman Rink yesterday in coolots. Pack light.

Jeff, here's the shows I think you should see while in the city for various reasons:
Grey Gardens (based on the Maysles doc)
Company (cast doubles as the orchestra)
Spring Awakening (100 year old banned play put to a score by Duncan Sheik)
High Fidelity (so I can see you write about bad movie-to-musical concepts)
Blythe Danner & Carla Gugino are doing Williams' Suddenly Last Summer off-Broadway, so check that out too. If you don't go see Evil Dead: The Musical, I'll be disappointed.

Jeff, you'll be happy to know that Kathleen Turner just won Best Actress in London for "Virginia Wolff"!
Glad you took the item down.

The biggest problem with Manhattan is all the tourists clogging the sidewalks, making it nearly impossible to get from my office to Starbucks and back in one piece, and here's yet another one on the way. As Burt Reynolds explains to Vittorio Gassman in Sharkey's Machine, "I'm gonna pull the chain on you, pal. And you wanna know why? 'Cause you're fucking up my city. 'Cause you're walking all over people like you own them. And you wanna know the worst part? You're from out of state."

sadly, i will be joining the tourist throngs next week also. but i won't be near starfucks or radio city hall...i'll be tripping down alleyways simon and garfunkel style, eating great pizza, drinking cafe and interviewing actors for a media project.
and that is a great line from SHARKEY'S MACHINE certainly one of burt's last terrific films and an underrated one at that.
see ya at cafe carlyle!

So if a bum with an out-of-control mop asks you for some change and your take on Dreamgirls, you'll know who it is.

SHARKEY'S MACHINE had that cut from Burt getting down with I think Rachel Ward to the phallic Westin Hotel. Smooth one Burt.

It's getting colder this weekend, so to paraphrase Jack in THE DEPARTED: "Pack accordingly."
Before you leave LA, check out SWEET LAND if you haven't already. Obviously, I've beem beating the bushes on this one for a month now that it's an Awards dark horse, and felt relieved/happy/vindicated today when it got nominated for Best First Feature and Best Actress (for Elizabeth Reaser)for the Independent Spirits.
It's left NY for now...but its currently in LA and Chicago, with other cities to follow. If NYC theater owners were smart, they'd book the film again, if these nominations today start the ball rolling. But until then, it's worth catching on the big screen in LA, as opposed to a screener DVD. The cinematography makes you think you're watching a Terence Malick film. (That would have been the perfect 3rd nomination. Oh well...)
And speaking of great Spirit nominated surprises, check out the VERY independent release FOUR EYED MONSTERS at the Cinema Village for one week starting this Friday. Since its Slamdance world premiere in early 2005, its been building word of mouth on the festival circuit, and they've created a unique grassroots movement for this film.
This gives you a taste (http://foureyedmonsters.com/susan-renting-dec-1st-nyc-opening/)of what they've achieved so far, and if you watch all their podcast episodes, or even a couple of them, you can get a sampling of how visually inventive FOUR EYED MONSTERS is. A perfect NYC movie for your first week.
