The Democratic surge last Tuesday -- "Voters were sick of phony swaggering, blustering and bellicosity, absent competency and accountability [and] were ready to trade in the deadbeat Daddy party for the sheltering Mommy party," in the view of N.Y. Times columnist Maureen Dowd -- is further proof that the winds are favoring for a Barack Obama run at the presidency, and so there really isn't any need to try and corner the guy. It doesn't matter what he said or didn't say to George Clooney because there's almost no way he won't be going for it.

To my mind, there is no connection between what happened on Tuesday and support for a young, handsome, untested figure who's never won a strongly competitive election. This is Washington stargazing and its most dreamy.

obama has already shown his weakness. he's weak. charming and inspiring, but lacking a "gravitas" in terms of standing up.

Gotta agree about Obama. People like him because he hasn't been around long enough to dissapoint people. He is basically an empty vessel for people to pour their hopes and dreams into. Christian, definitely agree about Webb, the man is extremely impressive, gravitas to spare. I get more impressed w/ him every time I hear him speak. I think the Dems are gonna have to run someone w/ military experience in '08 to have a chance and that means Wesley Clark or Webb but I've never felt inspired by Clark even though his resume is extremely impressive...a general w/ an MBA. Regarding Maureen Dowd, well if anyone read my psych profile of NYCBB and conservative men like him, her idea of 'marshmellow men' is pretty close to what I wrote. Yapping little poodles. I'm waiting for NYCBB to post his shrill commentary on this thread so I can re-post it here since it is severely on-topic.

Don't think have much use for Maureen Dowd, but "phony swaggering, blustering and bellicosity" -- yeah, that nails all the Bush administration, Fox News, and most of the Republicans. Especially NYCBusybody. A yapping poodle indeed. Heavily compensating for his insecurity.
Got to agree on Obama worship as well. Untested. Stargazing at its dreamiest. Though I still turned out for a rally headlining Obama a few days before the election.
Senator Tom Harkin got some laughs introducing Obama: "I have a young colleague in the Senate. He's kinda new. You may not have heard of him."
"Someone told me he's the second biggest rock star after Bono. I had to ask who Bono was."

Obama looks like a swell guy, and a hell of a candidate... for VICE President.
C'mon, read between the lines and then look at the field: Hillary is running, and she WILL get the nomination. Dollars to donuts the Obama "rise" is being masterminded by the bigger, more established players in the Party to shore him up as a can't-miss V.P. candidate to Hillary; someone endearing and overwhelmingly likable without any skeletons in the closet. Bush/Cheney with a role-reversal, basically.

Reposted for posterity.
Lets harken back to the halcyon days of...well, 4 days ago:
'Again, this proves that Conservatives are truly grown-ups, masculine, and the left are, and always, will be, feminized whiners, and lovers of terrorism.' - NYCBusyBody
Then when I questioned NYCBB why he isn't in Iraq fighting for freedom, in a rare moment of self-reflection, he retorted:
'Because the only things stronger than my sense of patriotism are my senses of selfishness and cowardice. This is why I have such an undying, deeply-rooted respect for those who volunteer selflessly and bravely to fight for America.' - NYCBusyBody
So while not entirely qualified to serve up a psychological profile of NYCBB and large percentage of Republican men, what the fuck:
NYCBB was a wimpy scared little kid who got picked on a lot and who probably had a somewhat wimpy father who was unable to provide a 'masculine' role model. Many picked upon boys grow up and fight back(little man complex?), others stay wimpy. Or perhaps NYCBB's father was not present at all during his upbringing, in any case NYCBB has serious daddy issues. If he were a female, he'd probably be a stripper w/ a 60 year old sugar daddy. Since he is a male he has, as a result of these issues, a complete worship of 'masculinity' and in fact has exaggerated these ideals into a kind of 'hyper-masculinity' which exists only in the realm of American action movies. I'm sure you've seen many of these conservative men who idolize Jack Bauer from FOX's '24', I'm also sure you've noticed many of the 'men' are of the wimpy variety. Because of this worship of the masculine, I think it is highly likely that NYCBB is a homosexual(not that there's anything wrong w/ that), this phenomenon seems to be present in Ted Haggard. I would be willing to wager that NYCBB has a thing for 'bears' or the more muscle bound type of man. These are the kind of men NYCBB has worshipped his whole life and who can hold him and make him feel protected. It is that feeling of being protected that NYCBB craves and it leads him to see govenment as 'Daddy'. Hence when anyone criticizes 'Daddy', NYCBB becomes unhinged and lashes out insanely.

Having once again shown his ass on this board, I think it's high time we enacted a moritorium on NYCBusybody mentions in general. Since he's made it clear he's only doing it for the attention. Like the one-party rule of his beloved gay-bashing, freedom-hating GOP, his day has passed.
Farewell, Busybody. To you and your fellow losers of the spirit and of the election.

Again Liberal wishing here. Cant you find a candidate to support that has actually done something? Not some flavor of the month who no one knows anything about. That's the only people that liberals support because they think thats what gets people elected.
This isnt some entry level job. 2 yrs as a Senator doesnt make one President. Just because hes black and gives a decent speech? That is how weak the liberal field is now. Because they will try for any alternative to Hillary they can.

i know jim webb has gone to war and his son is in afghanistan -- the only senator with a son in the war. jon tester of montana is an organic farmer. plenty of new folk coming in have great working class backgrounds as opposed to your bush-yale axis.
that's more than you can say for the thinktank neo-cons playing with real army men on the hill.
gimme a fucking break. i'll hold those libs feet to the fire the same way i did the repubs. but the difference is they want to do something to help the country, not just shrug in the name of war and the free market.
btw, you like your 5 day work week? thank libs for that. you like your car safe? libs. like standards for foor and air? libs.
you like war, poverty, bigotry? stick with the cons. their plan remains the same.

2 years as a Senator isn't a very long time, but it beats 6 as a governor in a state where the governorship is designed as a fairly weakened office. (The lieutenant governor has much more power and actually has to do the consensus buolding Bush claimed he was so proficient at during his tenure.) Considering that those 6 years of steady employment capped a life of failed ventures and a stint as a baseball team owner (big whoop), I don't see how anyone can feel small in comparison. The Rs were more than willing to throw their support behind an untested leader with far more negative experience than positive and didn't bat an eye. Now apparently throwing support behind people with strong lives of experience, and even longer experience in national politics than the former governor, is misguided and wishful thinking.
I'd personally like to see some more choices. But at this point I'm almost at the point where I'd listen to anyone who can string a few sentences together without sounding like a nervous high schooler trying to put across an ill-prepared book report in front of seventh period (complete with petulant defense of his faulty research) and has at least a concept of there being a whole other world wrapped around the space our country takes up.
