In the wake of the Democratics winning a solid majority in the House and (too soon to tell but odds are favoring) a bare majority in the Senate, Donald Rumsfeld has just announced he's stepping down as Secretary of Defense. Feels like a one-two punch to me...clearly a sign of cracks in the resolve of the Iraq War-supporting Bush cabal. This has to be the best pop-the-champagne day for Bush-loathing lefties in a long while. Where are the glasses?

A huge day for Bush-loathers, but the fact is, he has never governed conservatively. I like to think of that word independently of its popular spin. There's nothing conservative about starting unnecessary wars, ballooning budget deficits, abandoning very reliable long-held constitutional principles, torturing people, corrupting democracy and the political process in favor of the highest bidder, creating untold animosity abroad for the country, and incompetently botching almost every domestic and foreign affair you undertake. Good freaking riddance.

Did you see the same conference I did? Because the Bush I saw came off as petualant and royally pissed; sure his words were "conciliatory", but the delivery was terse and his answers to questions were impatient. I think his tone said much more about his true state-of-mind than his speech did, since he HAD to say those things, but you could tell it was a bitter pill and he didn't mean most of it.

I agree that this is exactly why people support him, however, for people who don't, this is also exactly why we don't. He is doing only now, in the wake of defeat, he should have been doing, oh, 3 and a half years ago. And saying he didn't announce/admit that Rummy was being let go because he didn't want to disrupt the elections?!? Of course he didn't!
It reminded me of the scene in Sideways when Miles finally comes clean to Maya, and when fumbling for an answer as to why he didn't do so sooner, she fills in for him "...but you wanted to fuck me first?" Bush wanted to Fuck us before admitting Rummy was toast.
So, yay! to Bush being contrite, extending an olive branch, building a bridge, whatever the fuck he says he's doing, I'm happy. I just wish we didn't have to FORCE him to see the light. It's like when you're 8, and you punch your 6 year old brother because he annoyed you, and your mom makes you apologize. You're not really sorry, but she's MOM, so what are you gonna do.

I never said Bush was a "regular guy." He's the POTUS and no "regular guy" can reach that position. However, he does have the "I don't listen to polls, I tell the polls what to think" attitude that some people really admire.
I agree that it would have been better if we didn't have to go through all this to get Bush to "see the light" but remember its not just him, its a mentality that has to change.
That's why I said earlier that I hoped that the Dems govern and not persecute because for this mentality to change they need to show how to govern and govern right.

America didn't vote for liberals, they voted against a Republican Party that had lost its way, and wasn't conservative anymore.
Have any of you idiots even looked at the Democrats that got elected? Jon Tester? Heath Shuler? These are family-values, conservative Democrats, who only won in Red Districts because they aren't liberal but also aren't Mark Foley or George Bush, unpopular because of the war. Do you really think the rest of America suddenly likes San Franciso/Manhattan/Hollywood values?
It's a cleansing time for the Conservative movement. Sometimes the country isn't where we're at, and you just take your lumps, admit it, and move on. It shows the despicable childishness of the Left that they can't do the same - if they lose an election, it was "stolen". If Republicans really could, or would, do that, wouldn't they have this time? Again, this proves that Conservatives are truly grown-ups, masculine, and the left are, and always, will be, feminized whiners, and lovers of terrorism.
Besides, it's more fun to be on the offensive. Destroying Nancy Pelosi and her band of America-hating sub-intellectual Democrats will be a ball. If they even make ONE slight move to the left, they'll be killed, because people didn't vote for that. And if she physically meets the fate of the Team America liberals, I wouldn't be too upset. Huzzah to her demise.

Now it's time for Dems to empower criminals like Alcee Hastings, who Pelosi is set to assign a top-level Oversight position:

The Democratic-controlled Senate convicted Judge Hastings of accepting a $150,000 bribe in 1981 in exchange for a lenient sentence and of perjury in his testimony about the case. He became only the sixth Judge in the history of impeachment in the United States to be removed from office by the United States Senate."

NYBB, as usual, I'm confused as to your actual beliefs, possibly because you'd rather "call out" liberals and go nyah-nyah-nyah than take a real position. You're gloating because the more conservative Dems got elected as a reaction against Bush -- both by voters, and by the Democratic party, who ran less traditionally liberal candidates (you know, because all of those current senators are so wildly progressive... but I digress).
I don't get it -- isn't that what you *want*? Something less partisan and more moderate? Mixed beliefs (some traditionally liberal, some traditionally conservative), rather than towing a party line?
You are, indeed, acting like someone who got what he wanted... but it seems like you're trying to have it both ways. The Dems essentially did what you thought they should've, and now you're chiding them for claiming victory. You're setting them up as both "fake" conservatives (that the voters won't tolerate if they go even an inch leftward) and genuine ones (that should taint any kind of Democrat victory vibe). I can see how that duality puts the Dems in a bind, but doesn't it put you in one, too? Unless you'd rather gloat than see anything get done in Washington.
I mean, personally, yes, I'm disappointed by a lot of these Dem candidates and by the country's creep rightward -- especially since so much of that seems fueld by exactly the kind of rightie social policies I *cannot* abide, like good ol'fashioned fear-o-gays. I can at least understand and respect the fiscal-conservative point of view; the social conservative creeps me right out.
But then, I'm not the one who crows at "both" sides (but really mostly the liberals, right?) for being so partisan and whiny and unproductive and elitist and blah blah blah. Then you gloat over Dems electing people who are for the gay-marriage ban. So do you really believe gays shouldn't be allowed to marry? I use that as an example because it's hard for me to take anyone who believes that seriously as anything but a tower of a particularly contemptible party line.

A few things:
The Democrats won-they fought a good campaign. Congratulations. Parties should always alternate power in a healthy democracy. Canada finally went Conservative last January, also. This is good.
The Democrats won by putting up plenty of conservative Democratic nominees. If Pelosi forces them to become liberals and vote the party line, they will be gone in two years. This will be no cake walk for the left.
Bush still has a veto. He will use it to curb the Democrats more extreme elements.
Those who are now saying they love America because of this, but hated it when Bush won should be ashamed of themselves. You should love your country no matter who is in power. Your faith in democracy should be greater than that.
Those using vulgarity should be ashamed of themselves. Use class and decorum.
If the Democrats spend the next two years digging up dirt on Bush, it will make it harder to win in 08.

I want the far right religious freaks out of politics, and I want the far left scorched earth angry posters too. People like NYC do no good to anyone - all they want to do is fight. If he hates America enough to want to see this fail, more power to him. However, I actually want to see it work. And I'm tired of Jesus-politics.

What kind of fantasy world do you live in, where a system endorsed by a public official meant to target fraud goes against him instead, and is still considered "well-run"?
Alan: "Nicol's correct in saying that constant investigations could jeopardize the Democrats' chances later on."
You're deluded, if you think the Dems were picked, because the public didn't want an investigation.

Good points, Alan. I'm tired of Jesus-politics and scorched-earthers, too. If Bush and members of his Administration are criminals, they'll be just as guilty after '08. The Dems don't really want to make the same mistake the Repubs did in '98 and blow a lot of political capital on a grudge-match. And that was during a time of lower national and global activity. The Dems have way too much work on their hands and too much territory to cover in a very short time to waste any energy on emotionally-fulfilling, though practically-useless measures. They've attained a slim beachead and need to press the fight, not celebrate and splurge the war chest on impeachment. They can achieve far greater good by pressing on and dismantling some of the garbage the one party system put in place.
This is a good day for the country, though. We have checks and balances again. (I even agree with Hicks' puppet metaphor, but dammit if the puppet show we've seen for the last six years hasn't outlived its entertainment value.)

How exactly did it go against him? He had to show his ID just like I did, just like pretty much everyone does. (If not an ID then a voter registration card.) I actually take it as a good sign that even the big shots have to play by the same rules we all do.

Yes, holding people accountable is stupid.

You mean like restoring habeas corpus?
"They can achieve far greater good by pressing on and dismantling some of the garbage the one party system put in place."
The only way to get rid of garbage is to start at its source.
From http://www.wsoctv.com/politics/10263771/detail.html :
"Poll workers at a Sullivans Island precinct turned the governor away when he didn't have his registration card and the driver's license he showed had a Columbia address."

Yes, that's exactly what I mean. That and much, much more. But I would actually put that at the top of my list.
"The only way to get rid of garbage is to start at its source."
Or put your lawmaking might behind correcting what has gone wrong since we don't live in the comic book world mentality your response shows you to have. A quicker way to say it is "a fish rots from the head down" as does this Administration. But a Democratic Party with a slim margin is going to be much more effective dismantling the mistakes of the last six years, utilizing alliances on the other side of the aisle (since, you see, this election didn't come about just because Democrats got out and voted but because some Republicans turned their backs on an Administration that had betrayed them), and leave Bush to fester in his own isolation. After '08 if a wider majority can be gained (which would be a lot easier to do with a load of accomplishments to point to from the previous year) and a change in the Executive Branch, then a deeper investigation into crimes and misdemeanors can commence. No one said they shouldn't be held accountable. Only that now is the time for real tangible action to correct many wrongs. But pressing impeachment proceedings when you have an even smaller majority than the Repubs did in '98 is, yes, stupid and doomed to failure. Let's fight and win some needed battles on the fronts of habeus corpus, reproductive rights, taxes, and the like and go after the big game when we have a bit more ammo in our arsenal.
And your link still doesn't point up a problem. He had to prove who he was to vote. Pretty much everyone does. What's your point?

People like NYCBusyBody are the reason normal people CRUSHED the Repugs last night.
Six years ago, you zealot slugs crawled out from under your rocks and started to speak in tongues, telling everyone that you had been sent from a Heavenly planet to save/take over our freedom-loving World. Normal people, who had completely forgot you existed (having steered clear of your creepy mega-churces and gun shows for years), were suddenly scared shitless and they decided that, in order to survive as a species, it would be necessary to work very, very hard to get rid of you and to never again forget the consequences of ignoring you.
Last night, was the culmination of all that work.
Normal people used their grey matter as a tool of logic and not emotion and DESTROYED the creepy alien nightmare perpetuated by your NeoCon authoritarian fascist daddies. In one fell swoop, normal people DESTROYED your last six years of effort to dismantle 220 years of Constitutional law and erect an Orwellian state with your very own Thought Police and a never-ending war against Oceania.
Just like that. It all vanished. Poof!
And last night was just the beginning because, you see, normal people get it now. They're vigilant now.
Of course, I have to assume that your interpration of events fall more on the lines of, "What did I do wrong to incur the Lord God's wrath?"
Perhaps even more piety is the answer to your problems.
See you in 2008, fool.

Just remember that "throw the bums out" works both ways. The blue man group (a.k.a "those damned dirty liberals" if you speak Partisan) has two years to do something before another national referendum/popularity contest occurs.
I hope the Democrats spend those two years well because the electorate is nothing if not fickle. If they spend too much time punishing the new minority they may find that the bums they threw out today are the bums they have to kiss tomorrow.

I'm astonished that people here haven't realised that as soon as you attempt to approach NYCBB rationally and calmly point out his rampant hypocrisy, he refuses to reply. Instead, he will lazily target the short, sarcastic responses. I suspect this is because, intellectually, this is all he can handle, and I still wonder why people are upset by him.

Also from billmon:
"The president's not the kind of guy who is going to be somber about things," said press secretary Tony Snow. But he added: "They have not gone the way he would have liked."
The president watched the results in the White House residence, where Snow described the mood as "businesslike."
"The president often likes to conduct business while curled up in a fetal position on the floor," Snow explained. "It helps him concentrate."

You sound pretty angry dude, I know how you can work it off. Just go down to the nearest army recruitment center and enlist. Then you can fight for freedom in Iraq, you know the way a 'grown-up, masculine' man like yourself would do. Oh no, wait, thats right...your just a simpering little coward. Nevermind.

Wait, wait, was I expecting a rational debate on the Internet? About politics? On a movie site? What kind of dumbass am I? Stupid naive liberal expectations. Bad expectations! Bad!
How about a much more interesting topic. Who do you think will be the first to use the Chewbacca Defense (other than NYCBB)? Some might argue that Shrub's presidency is a lasting monument to the thing.
"Weapons of Mass Destruction? Ah... Consider this, Chewbacca is from the planet Kashyyyk, but lives on the planet Endor..."

This isn't the first time you've posted along these lines, Nicol. You're really scared about this, aren't you?
What are you afraid they'll find behind the curtain? Jeff Gannon/Guckert in assless chaps, with his bare chest covered in stick-on medals, wielding a whip in the Oval Office?
After Foley and Haggard it doesn't sound so far-fetched, does it?
