"I just saw Children of Men yesterday, and it's a spectacular piece of work. Why is no one buzzing about it? What's the problem? Could you address this on your site because for the life of me, I don't get the silence on this flick." -- New York-based journalist Lewis Beale.
HE to Beale: The basic view seems to be that people think it's too bleak -- even though the story is about the return of life and natural creation into a world that has all but given up and is falling apart. And even though the cinematography alone (by Emmanuel Lubezki) delivers the strongest jolt of cinematic excitement I've experienced all year. Go figure...mainstream is as mainstream does.

I really wanted to love it, but found it boring (except for the occasional technical flourish and the occasional sequence). Boring = deadly.

And yet, people heaped praise on the new Bond and Batman movies for being "dark." I would have thought the same crowd would dig Children of Men, but perhaps putting a fetus on the poster isn't the best way to lure the crowds inside.
Children of Men actually has a more upbeat ending than the novel, though the novel's tone overall wasn't as heavy on the grime and decay.

Are we talking about the same kind of strong cinematical jolts as the 3D airplane sequence in Superman Returns? Just want to make sure before I get excited again.

I don't get the feeling Universal is pushing it all that hard. It wasn't shown at Toronto or at the AFI Fest in L.A. In my area, there was exactly one screening (in October), which was scheduled against two other films at the same time. I had to see one of the other pictures and I figured there would be other CHILDREN screenings closer to the opening. But even though I've asked, nothing has been set up and I was told there aren't any Academy screeners available (hard to believe). Very frustrating situation.
