I literally just walked in from seeing LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA and I will label anyone who thinks FLAGS the film more deserving of any awards completely out to lunch. LETTERS is the film FLAGS should have been. Further, it shames Scorsese for doing B-movie genre work while Eastwood turns in a film to rival UNFORGIVEN as his career best.

My only quibbles with it are very minor: it should have kept the original title (RED SUN, BLACK SAND), the closing bookend wasn't needed (although not as bad as the bookends in SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. LETTERS should have ended with the final shot from 1944) and it had too many "Hollywood" type explosions during the first attacks from the Corsairs.

LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA will become one of the top 10 if not top 5 war films, mark my words.

Not a chance. Editing winners almost always come from Best Pic nominees, and when they don't, then it goes to films that take a handful of technical awards (Matrix, Roger Rabbit). The last film to win Editing and not fall into either of those categories? "Bullitt"

It'll have to be happy with a nod, and that's it.

RoyBatty, you're out to lunch. I haven't come across a single soul who says Flags deserves it over Letters. And Archive Guy, am in agreement. We'll see how it shapes up. Like Pete Hammond but wish he wasn't always stating the obvious.

Is it just me, or does it seem like Forest Whitaker is going to be upseted when it comes to Best Actor since Last King hasn't caught on with a big audience? It seems to me that race is between DiCaprio and Smith.

Uh, bipedalist that was my point and I made no claim to have heard anyone saying such so far (but there probably will be some in the end).

Phil - Considering the splash PURSUIT made over the weekend, I think we going to see a repeat of the Jamie Foxx vs Don Cheadle matchup two years ago. And again the star in the big studio film is going to trump the actor in the smaller feature.

RoyBatty: I don't know if I even considered that a "match-up". Seemed like Jamie Foxx was pretty much the shoe-in the entire time, just like Helen Mirren this year.

And for some reason I'm thinking DiCaprio is going to walk away with it this year. But the truth is I could easily see four people in that category potentially winning. (O'Toole, Whitaker, Smith and DiCaprio) It's going to be an interesting race.

I too just got back from LETTERS, and it's definitely better than FLAGS. Still, it's not the Best Film of the Year by a long shot.

Amazing to witness the Deification of Clint Eastwood. When I was a teen, Clint was Dirty Harry and co-starring with orangutans, and the critics hated him.

Now he's a cinematic God who can do no wrong. I think if SPACE COWBOYS came out this year, it would be winning awards.

But don't get me wrong, I'm a Clint fan too.

Also saw Breaking & Entering, not top-tier Minghella, but worth a look, especially Juliette Binoche, never sexier.

Peter O'Toole will win. FW is wonderful too.

The Eastwood movies are both terribe. However, it is their club and maybe they will "honor" him
again. That is like voting for Bush 3 times.

Eastwood was a wonderful Dirty Harry. He needs to act and be directed by others.
