If you ask me, the Las Vegas Film Critics called it straight and true by awarding their Best Cinematography award to Children of Men dp Emmanuel Lubezki (a.k.a. "Chivo"). They also decided somewhat originally by naming Djimon Honsou as Best Supporting Actor for his work in Blood Diamond, and by toasting Thank You For Smoking's Jason Reitman for having written the Best Screenplay (original or adapted) award. Otherwise, it was the same old litany -- The Last King of Scotland's Forest Whitaker for Best Actor, The Queen's Helen Mirren for Best Actress, Dreamgirls' Jennifer Hudson for Best Supporting Actress, The Departed's Martin Scorsese for Best Director. The Best Film Editing prize went to The Departed's Thelma Schoonmaker, and good for that.

Thank You For Smoking was the most smug, unfunny movie of the year, and the script was a thin as a vanilla wafer.

Would anyone have bothered with Thank You for Smoking if the director's last name weren't Reitman? The film was memorable (and slightly so, at that) only for Rob Lowe's agent and the curious long-shot sex scene. I guess it stood out at Sundance, but that isn't hard to do.
I also have to beef about Schoonmaker's award. She has deserved others, but many of her choices in The Departed felt arbitrary to me -- almost like she was trying to do CPR via editing.

Best Picture went to The Departed.
Can Forrest Whitaker be considered the front-runner now?

I was hoping LQ Jones would get a little strange attention for A Prairie Home Companion.

Completely unintentionally Thank You For Smoking is a satire of itself and the conventions of movie making and Hollywood--the child actor thrown in to gain sympathy, a movie about smoking with no smoking in it, the faux insider knowledge--he got a meeting at CAA--wow; but most importantly it calls itself politically incorrect, coming from Fox which calls itself fair and balanced, this only reiterates one fact, if you have to say it about yourself, you are not it.
