A tiny bit more than one out of three moviegoers -- 34% -- would avoid any movie Tom Cruise is starring in, according to a just-published Gallup poll. I knew the guy had high negatives but not that high. The actor with the next highest negative rating -- 18% -- is Angelina Jolie. What could that be about? People don't like her because she's too pretty, too rich, adopts orphans, makes noises "like an animal being killed" during lovemaking.... what? The third highest neg rating -- 15% -- was earned by Mel Gibson.

My wife is one of those who will never want to see a Mel Gibson film ever again. She finds the man repulsive because of his beliefs and politics.
Tom Cruise is up there, but mostly because she thinks of him as a vapid pretty boy and nothing really personal about him.

The Angelina thing is about people being pissed off that she "stole" Brad Pitt away from Jennifer Aniston. I've heard that comment from a lot of people.

Unlike the negheads that responded to the survey, I'm able to separate the real life person from the character onscreen.
I disagree with Mel Gibson about politics and beliefs, but that doesn't stop me from watching his movies.
While I think some of the negative reaction to AJ is because of BP, I think some of it has to do with jealousy. She's gorgeous, rich, does humanitarian work, adopted kids, and landed one of the best looking guys in the world.
As for Tom Cruise, his wacky antics offscreen haven't kept me from enjoying M:I:3. I personally don't care if he jumps up and down on couches or if he argues with a newsperson about psychiatry, as long as it doesn't affect his work.

"Walter Scott's Personality Parade" - admittedly a source that ranks slightly below coin-flipping and listening-to-the-voices-in your-head for reliability - recently cited some sort of popularity list that had dropped Cruise from No 1 into the 400s...

Men regard Angelina Jolie as a nice 'piece of arse' but don't care much for her acting or films.
Women dislike Jolie because she "steals husbands" and wouldn't want their men around her.
I am not even throwing in the sadomasochistic tendencies she has (cuts, blood vials etc) or the rude manner in which she shuns daddy Jon Voight.
That is why there isn't much of a fanbase out there for Jolie.

I find it funny that the photo they have on the AMC page accompanying Apocolypto is Mel Gibson, circa, let's say, 1985:

It seems a little early for the 'we didn't give it to him when he was still making good movies' award, no?

I don’t get those polls, last year everybody was felling bad for Aniston and wanted her to do well in movies, I thought that the entire country would go to see her movies just to support , but they bombed. Considering the amount of crap that Jolie had to endure from tabloids, I still think she did well in this poll, I mean two years with NO stop of magazines trashing you and your personal life is hard.
Funny thing nobody blames the guy.

Angelina Jolie is not a bad actress, but she was elevated to star status more within Hollywood (much like Colin Ferrel) than by the movie going public. Almost all of her films are financial failures, and while I don't tend to harp on that, in this case there is a reason, she generally does movies that are barely watchable.
That said, Jolie couldn't be as dull as Jennifer Aniston in her brightest moment even if she tried.

Colin: I think that's from "Mrs. Soffel," so you're exactly right - 1985. And please don't ask me how I knew that information off the top of my head.
As for the comment about Jolie being "a crappy actress" - please. You may not like her, but the girl has chops whether you want to admit it or not.

Jolie has one or two notes that she plays very well, but when called upon to try something beyond "troubled adolescent" or "assassin/housewife," her performances are not particularly convincing--and beyond that, she's not particularly likable. Tomb Raider, in theory, could have been mindless fun, but she's just *boring*. See also: Beyond Borders, Original Sin, and (my personal favorite) Playing God.
It would appear that she's up to old tricks in The Good Shepherd. "What you do?? I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU DO!" sets my teeth on edge every time I see that trailer. No, thank you.
Incidentally, how is De Niro still ranked so high? It must be because of his recent string of critical and financial successes: Hide and Seek, Godsend, Analyze That, City by the Sea, Showtime, 15 Minutes... Did they poll "1,003 moviegoers" who only see one movie a year?

I know more than one woman who refers to Jolie only as "the homewrecker." They won't even use her name. Her involvement with Pitt just fanned the flames of the basic jealousy of beauty and sexuality that all people naturally have of celebrities. And going after "Rachel Green's" husband just made it more personal.

Jolie's performance in "Gia" was one of the most dynamic I've seen any woman give in the last 10 years. She has incredible star power -- even her Maria Montez performance in "Alexander" showed that. She's best when she's playing women who are borderline insane and given that it's almost impossible to hide her beauty, she always going to have an uphill battle trying to endear herself to the mainstream female audience. However, her popularity among lesbians is through the roof.

Gibson got a standing ovation when he appeared on THE TONIGHT SHOW last night. Combine that with Trent Lott's return to a Senate leadership post, and I'd say things are looking mighty good for Michael Richards.

I'd be more than curious to see how they structured a bullshit-sounding poll like this. "Which actor do you hate more, Tom Cruise or Mel Gibson?" "Name an actor who's public life makes you not want to see his or her films." When shooting fish in a barrel, the biggest ones closest to the top are going to take the first hits. Jeff, if you need to fill space, just post more pictures of the crappy neighborhood you're staying in. This shit is weightless beyond measure.

Why would people give Mel a standing ovation? That seems strange. It's not like they had already seen his movie and loved it. It's not like he's rescued orphans from a raging fire lately. Could it have been staged?
