"No one in Hollywood since Greta Garbo has had more mysterious allure than Sasha Stone, editor of Oscarwatch.com. In fact, let me shamelessly declare myself right here and now to be the self-appointed president of the Sasha Stone Fan Club. Not only is she a brilliant cyber-editor, but one of the savviest observers of the Oscar scene and, as every online Oscar nut knows, a great, gracious gal beloved by all who know her.

"But it's hard to know her, frankly. She's not a brazen, bugle-blasting self-promoter like me. As a result of her classy reserve -- or shyness? -- she's become famously elusive and mysterious. A magnificent cyber-legend. Everywhere I hear, 'Have you ever met Sasha Stone? I haven't. Do you know what she's like?' Of course, being a fan, I sing her praises, but I've had to admit for many years, 'Nope. Never met her. I only know Sasha via email and I keep trying to set up a dinner here, a cup of coffee there, but our plans always fall apart.'
"Alas, we haven't pulled off that hookup yet, but we did manage a podcast chitchat today just hours after the New York film critics voted and one day after the L.A. media wags did the same." -- The Envelope's Tom O'Neil intro-ing a 12.11.06 audio interview.

I listened to this interview and I was particularly baffled by O'Neil's unquestioning insistence -- like its common sense and nobody could disagree -- that Dreamgirls is art and Little Miss Sunshine is not. Personally, while I haven't seen Dreamgirls yet, I'm getting the sense that the opposite might be true. Dreamgirls looks like the shallow, insubstantial entertainment, whereas Sunshine has some genuine depth of observation and craft.

LMS is a formula picture, through and through. There's zero depth to the cut out "quirky" characters. It's nice, it's not even close to being great.

Devin, again I haven't seen Dreamgirls yet, but even its most ardent supporters seem to acknowledge that it's a formula picture. In my opinion, LMS poses as a formula comedy, only to subvert all the conventions of the genre. Agree to disagree, I guess.

I've really enjoyed oscarwatch for the last few years now. It's a great resource. But the overuse of the Goldman quote "nobody knows anything" is just stupid and maddening. Enough! It's one of those phrases that belongs in a Yogi Berra quote book...blech.

Sasha has forgotten more about the Oscar race than a lot of people will ever know. The fact that Oscarwatch is about the awards race and not about her own peccadillos is why actual industry people, i.e. directors, actors, read Oscarwatch. Also, people posting comments on people's blogs at 9:20AM are generally males with nothing better to do. Unfortunately, the perceived anonymity of the internets can do nothing to disguise that true fact.

Thanks for the heads up. Despite how many times I use it, though, people always A) accuse me of thinking that I know everything (even though I remind them of this) and B) everyone else out there acts as if they do know how things are going to go - it's a best guess at best. I've proved it. But okay, enough already. I'll stop.

In the interest of "true fact" Eve, not everyone who comments at this site is writing form the same time zone. I posted a comment at 9:43, which was actually 12:43 my time, a full 102 minutes after you posted your comment (assuming you're in Jeff's time zone, as you imply). Just so you know.

I'm hoping my previous comment was filed under "constructive criticism" and not seen as an attack (something that is far too easy in the ether). The selection of oscar recipients from year to year remains one of the great mysteries of the universe (ok, maybe not THAT great). I say this having done quite well in my own oscar pool over the years.
Thanks for the site and keep up the good work.

eve- wow, sorry if i offened you. what, are you the one who runs oscarwatch or something? going around and defending it against comments? my comment wasn't a "slur." i wasn't comparing the picture to harry knowles or anything! i was just saying, in my opinion, oscarwatch was fine when it was all there was. now there are much better oscar blogs. that's all. calm down. and why does it matter what time i leave a comment? get a life. it wasn't a slur.

No, Eve is not me. I wish I were that funny, though. It's okay if you think OW has fallen behind. We're not curing brain cancer, we're not writing the great American novel, we're not even making a great porn flick. Lucky for you you have so many other choices.

Jaydlyn, is Eve Harrington really an "esoteric" name? I don't think that's the word you're looking for. Either way, did you have a point somewhere in there?

esoteric means limited to a small circle. i used that word because not many people would recognize that the name was one of a ficitional character. i could have used a better word. with the little jabs you've been taking at me, i know you are eve harrington. sasha, get a life. go update your blog. stop picking fights with posters.

Miss Eve Harrington is not, I think we can now agree, Ms. Sasha Stone. But why is so much time on boards like this one spent in this pusuit? ('You must have multiple identities,' 'But I don't!' 'But I think you do!,' etc.) It's a mystery to me.
Meanwhile, I'm here to tell you that Sasha is beautiful in both body and spirit, besides being the clever, savvy and knowing editor/writer/blogger that she is. (Her earlier responses to comments on this thread speak for themselves when it comes to how humble and gracious she is towards those who might be critical of her or her work.)
As Sasha points out, Oscar watching isn't rocket science -- but it is a science -- one that she, and a handful of others, continue to master. As she also points out, the more the merrier when it comes to Oscar race blogs. I'll end this by saying, Live and live, and can't we all just get along?
-Just the two cents of someone who's known Sasha since she was first analyzing the Oscar race -- back when we were mere tots, and should have been playing with dolls. (And I'm not her imaginary friend, I swear.)
