I'll always feel good about Christmas, although, that said, this Francis Bacon painting felt like an inexplicably right thing to post tonight...no offense.
Very James Brown, cape and all. There are eight of these "Study for Portrait" paintings, as well as this famous one, "Study after Velazquez's Portrait of Pope Innocent X" from 1953.
It was a bummer to wake up on Christmas and hear that James Brown had died. Not quite as bad as 1977, with the news that Chaplin had died (and made even worse the next day with the death of Howard Hawks) but still enough to put a damper on the festivities.
I saw all eight of these about ten years ago while in San Diego. The Contemporary Museum of Art in La Jolla had a Bacon exhibit, THE PAPAL PAVILION. You walked into an octogonal room and were surrounded by all eight "Screaming Popes".
Memorably creepy...

That Bacon film, "Love Is The Devil", is pure torture.
I'll turn off a lot of films on DVD, but I very rarely walk out of an actual theater. This one was a no-brainer "get me the fuck out of here ... now".

The face reminds me of the face-melting scene at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark.
