If I were the presiding judge in the Nicole Ritchie driving-the- wrong-way-on-the-134 case, that dumb cooze would get 90 days in jail followed by a 60-day forced rehab under lock and key. No discussion ...that's it. If I'd been in L.A. I could have been been on the 134 and had a head-on collision; ditto one of my sons. I don't care if I sound like a right-winger -- she's dangerous trash, a menace, a public enemy.

So you're saying that a liberal would let her off easy because they felt sorry for her. It's great that common sense and fair punishment are now defined as 'right-wing' traits.

Okay, so is it liberal to want to let people drive drunk and rightwing to expect that they be held responsible...
...or is a rightwinger someone who thinks only the rich should be allowed to get away with driving drunk, and a liberal someone who thinks only the rich should actually be held accountable for it?
As usual in these things, I don't find a place for myself at any point on YOUR spectrum...

Jeff: 90 days in jail w/ 60 days of rehab is light for a DUI. I'd be giving someone at least 6 months to a year for that, and two years before they could get their license. But since she's a celebrity, and to quote Aaron McGruder["She's white."], she'll be drunk again in no time.
Mgmax: I'd imagine liberals are for people of all classes being held accountable for DUI, since Clinton actually set tougher standards on the intoxication limit, while Republiscum of all stripes chose to vote a drunk-driving, coke-snorting failure as President.

The problem is that people buy into this "liberals are soft on crime BS," when it's the right-wingers who look the other way when laws are broken. (Remember when they railed about how criminals "get off on technicalities"--until Oliver North used one to get his convictions overturned.) This liberal believes Richie deserves to have several books thrown at her--though it would have been better for all concerned if she'd simply wrapped her car around a tree.

In much the same way shotgunning your wife and child before turning the gun on yourself could be considered "suicidal intent", I suppose.
In my fantasy universe, Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan and Nicole Ritchie would all be sentenced to lives of abject obscurity where they have no money, no fame, and no one paying the wee littlest bit of attention to them. And their family crest would be a booze bottle full of pills and genitalia.

It's really hard not to want one of these girls to go down...hard. They are walking cautionary tales but money seems to save them at every turn. Lindsay Lohan has demonstrated some self-absorbed behavior in the past, but she is nowhere near the trashy league of Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie. At least Lohan actually has talent (whether or not she uses it well is debatable). But Paris and Nicole are just famous for being idiots and then proudly flaunting their stupidity for the whole world to see.

Not in this country (the UK) where such incidents are quite commonplace and usually involve drivers of all ages, not just the drunk ones, confusedly taking the wrong ramp to drive onto the motorway/freeway.

As someone who today who would be considered a "liberal" (i.e., I'm to the left of Hannity), I can understand why rich people are afraid that 90% of America wants to punish them. It's not true, but I understand the guilty conscious of those who have gone along with the extremists.

Well, yes. If you have to drive, don't drink. It's that simple. Why is this even a debate any more? It's worse than going quail hunting after a few drinks - in your hands you hold a deadly weapon.

Where I live in Northern California, its commonplace. Even more so to drive drunk AND high at the same time, usually when they're about to pass out, around 4am. And the thing that always knocks my jaw down is how these people will then go to work and talk about it like it was just another part of their evening: "I got so wasted I could barely start the car...".
And they get so annoyed when you call them on it. As if you were their mom scolding them for drinking before they're 21, like drunk driving is just another youthful indiscretion: "What am I supposed to do, man? WALK home!?" Holy boy...

Wait, I thought police brutality was a way to insure that rich white people stay rich. But hey, if it helps, I think that Condy should be executed along with Dubya for treason.
christian: Don't forget that rich white guy in Chile who murdered 3,000 people, but got off on insanity after being extradited by rich white nations.
