Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

The Eagle Has Landed

The air in Manhattan was mucky and clammy as I walked out of the Port Authority bus station this morning, and then it started raining off and on. In other words, perfect for an ex-New Yorker. Hollywood Elsewhere regrets yesterday's absence, etc., but travel days are sometimes a bigger bitch than usual. Things are back on track, though, despite two hours sleep last night on the plane. As long as the Red Bull holds out things should work out. A second look at Dreamgirls happens tonight, and then a Good German junket encounter tomorrow morning.

If only those clouds weren't here today . . .

Oh well, at least we didn't get slammed by that snowstorm in the Midwest . . .

APOCALYPTO is a fantastic reimagining of FIRST BLOOD.

sounds fine by me...the central story of FIRST BLOOD is timeless, so a reimagining of that story set in ancient Mayan civilization will probably be quite a trip....can't wait!

Wells - ever been to La Luna? Best Italian restaurant ever! Mulberry Street, next door to Ferraro's pastery shop.

Give it a go. The sauce is very close to my grandmother's.

Welcome back to our fair city, Jeffrey. Sorry the temperature's plummeting overnight – hope you caught a bit of the unseasonable 70-degree weather before it disappeared.

Always found La Luna too touristy, crowded and mediocre, unless they've changed.

Try Pellegrino at 132 Mulberry instead

i've eaten a few times at Angelos and whenever I am in town I will make the trip over there. I always get the same thing--Lunguini with clam sauce (the white). I can't speak to their tomato sauce, but my father loves it, and he's as Italian as they come.

You guys forgetting El Cortile? Great food and its beautiful inside. Whenever a character gets killed on the Sopranos the cast takes the actor playing that character there for dinner.

Oh man my advice to people looking for good Italian food in nyc...stay away from little italy! Most of the red sauce places there are tourist traps serving glorified chef boyardee with greek waiters pretending to be italian (I lived on Mott and Hester for five years and tried them all, each worse than the other)..for true old school, mafia-feeling red sauce head to Arthur Avenue in the Bronx. For great Italian food head to Mario Batali's Lupa or Max on Ave B.
