I don't give a rat's ass about a director's ethnicity, sexuality, political leanings, number of freckles, shoe size, etc. I just know what I see up on the screen. And what I saw was one of the best directed films I've ever seen in "Children of Men."

It's all about the date change. Makes it near impossible for last-minute buzz surges to change the way people vote. See it almost every year. ANd in fact, there isn't even really enough time for it to saturate with Academy voters, post DGA announcement. It used to be different - with each announcement having time to settle in. Now, they all come so fast and furiously, you don't see a lot of difference between them anymore.

As much as I enjoyed the movie, there really wasn't much "directing" going on in "Little Miss Sunshine."

Scorsese's a lock for the Oscar, which is fitting -- he will have won it "his way" without having to cater to the academy (as people suggested he did with Aviator, which I actually prefer to Departed).

The big story here is, again, that Universal fucked Cuaron and Children of Men. They didn't know how to market it, and they released it in a very crowded time instead of giving it a long lead time to build momentum. The movie needs time to absorb. Instead it'll scrape together a couple technical Oscars at best.

Best picture will be the charming if very, very slight Little Miss Sunshine, by a nose. It's the only one with across-the-board appeal, and it's got a "message."

Oh well, wouldn't be the first time Oscar dropped the ball.

You are correct, sir. My wife and I were in
the UK last September when CHILDREN OF MEN
premiered. Universal should have released it
day-and-date in the U.S.

But it's not as important to Universal as
EVAN ALMIGHTY and ROB COHEN'S MUMMY are.

Not enough eye candy.
