Babel wins the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture, Drama!! Shocker! First shocker of the night! Didn't see this coming, frankly. Was this just me? I don't think so. This will provide, hopefuly, a big shot in the arm for ticket sales. Hooray for the team, hooray for Alejandro.

I'm going to go ahead and guess that the equal love the HFPA had for Departed and The Queen effectively split the vote.

I'm not sure why anyone thought that Babel wouldn't win. There's a reason why it got so many nominations and obviously the HFPA decided to give it BP rather than trying to give individual awards (especially when many of them were going up against Dreamgirls/The Queen). IMO, Babel, Dreamgirls and The Queen are still the strongest BP contenders. Not sure where this ridiculous Departed frontrunner thing came from.

Most pundits were predicting Babel that I know about. I would have gone with The Queen over that one or certainly The Departed. Still, whatever! HFPA would pick something really international though, wouldn't they? On to the SAGs. Please let DiCaprio take Best Supporting Actor there!!!

Thank you to Innaritu for mentioning Del Toro and Cuaron, I was hoping that he would and did. Classy guy.

But that's a rarity and three of the BP candidates weren't even nominated for GG (also a rarity). It's obvious that critics/journalists and the Academy have not been on the same page for a couple years. If The Departed or The Queen win BP, this would be the third year in a row where Oscar BP doesn't coincide with either GG BP and we'd be seeing a new trend.
But I think Babel and Dreamgirls' wins will certainly help them be taken more seriously among Academy voters when both of them ultimately show up on the ballot.

The Departed seems too violent and not "important" enough to be considered the frontrunner for oscar. It's a great friggin' movie though. I'm thinking the elderly voters won't go for it much. However, I think there's still room for an odd surprise here and there at the oscars. There usually is. SAG may or may not clear some things up, but probably not. Just let it be something other than Dreamgirls that gets the big one this year -- that's all I'm asking at this point. That movie gave me a headache.

Lame show. I was let down that there wasn't a smackdown between Arnie and Beatty. One thing I noticed was how much the industry despises Mel Gibson now...very faint applause for Apocalypto.
It irks me watching famous people twaddle on about how great their peers are...why should we the ordinary citizens of the world care? Probably because our lives are somewhat boring. Also why did everyone look glazed over?...along with the botox everyone was wearing heavy bronzer which made them look strange.

moviebob: you nailed it - ghastly.
so many dynamic, creative, exciting films this year and almost all of them were MIA or got short shrift. glad iwo jima got noticed, but at the expense of lives of others and pan's labyrinth? NOOOOO!!!!
and of course Mel's masterwork can't win here or anywhere as he dwells now east of eden.
but the terrific acting work in notes on a scandal, venus and little children...MIA.
united 93? can't go there as these voters think 911 is just a bushian excuse for war.
so what we are left with is all total predictability except for the shocker of babel which is the saddest part of the evening...when they went for "edgy" they went hamfisted and pretentious PC.
let's drag out moviebob's word again: "ghastly."

Regarding LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, a wider frame of reference than NATIONAL LAMPOON'S VACATION needs to be applied.
LMS, to me, seems clearly influenced by Michael Ritchie-directed satirical comedies (SMILE, THE BAD NEWS BEARS)from the 1970s.

I believe he mentioned him among the rest of the crew members who have been with him on the rest of his films. But Arriaga was pointedly NOT singled out. Weird, considering the solidarity Innaritu's shown with the other Mexican directors... Wonder what the REAL story is there...

Seriously, they could edit out 90% of the show and you would be missing nothing. The only speech I moderately enjoyed (thus didn't turn the channel) was Hugh Laurie. I stuck through the Cohen speech out of curiousity but in the end he was just pulling another stunt which was completely expected. As soon as Whitaker started mumbleing...click. Didn't even bother with Beatty since he has the communication skills of an infant.

I liked it, it's fun in the same way that freakshows like "The Beast" or "Cannibal Holocaust" are fun, i.e. "when's the next time I'll see what a feature-length arcade-style brawler disguised as a Mayan historical pic directed by an alcoholic anti-semetic borderline-sociopath looks like??" It's not any kind of great film.
