Due respect to Neil Labute, but this "Best Scenes from The Wicker Man" YouTube clip is hilarious. It didn't seem all that funny when I saw the film. (Except for Nic Cage lumbering around in the bear suit.)

You know, this wasn't a very good movie, definitely not, but I was pretty sure when I saw it that a lot of this stuff -- maybe not all, but a lot of it in the first half or three-quarters of the movie -- was intended as funny on some level.
If I remember correctly, the bee bit isn't in the movie -- maybe it's an alternate or deleted bit from the DVD?
Anyway, it's a bad movie, but a semi-interesting one, if only because Nic Cage is incapable of giving a dull performance.

I keep thinking about who Labute is as a filmmaker--he tends to explore the relationship between male and female--but i can't quite figure out what he was doing with this movie. Is Cage's character supposed to be a dumb male, like the bee honey loving women think he is? Is he showing how stubborn and resilient Cage's character is, which in turn, makes him dumb? I dont know, it's funny though.

It wasn't unintentionally funny like Wicker Man appears to be, but Da Vinci Code was the worst time I had at a theater in 2006. If it had Tom Hanks running around in a bear costume randomly clocking people, it might have been worth seeing.

I seem to remember speculating here a couple of days before "Wicker Man" opened that the reason Warners wasn't previewing it for critics might have been because it was too good.

I mean jeez, I studied film theory and only got around to Citizen Kane a few years ago (of course they showed it in class, but it clashed with dinner time and I was a poor student who couldn't afford to eat anywhere but the halls of residence)...

I agree. It was just so damn serious and dull but in no way good. Of course Ron Howard was smart in making it this way. If he would of gone for the un-intentional laughs and lighter tone the film would be less popular with the book's deadhead followers. More entertaining but less profitable if there's any logic to that.

Dixon, to answer your worst movie question, I skipped The Wicker Man, but I wasn't so lucky with "The Black Dahlia" the worst film from a respected filmmaker that I personally watched in 2006. I said essentially the same thing in the MV thread to, so I apologize for the redundance, but it was worth saying again.

Da Vinci. Yes, it's biggest sin was boring the crap out of me. I swear it took longer to watch the movie than read the book. Yet it made a kabillion dollars proving once again I know bubkiss about the making and marketing of movies.
The Black Dahlia was a mess yet somehow I left the theater feeling I got my money's worth. I didn't recommend it to anyone later but I thought to myself "Well, that was something" which doesn't sound like a lot, but it's more than I said about Duh Vinci Load. I wish that De Palma had played it straight a la Untouchables and really told the story of the Black Dahlia or really gone off the rails with the Black Dahlia just as a riffing point. He kind of did both and ended up using Black Dahlia as just a riffing point but never really went completely batshit. You know, real Michael Caine in drag with a razor kind of stuff. I kind of dug the bits with Hillary Swank and her mom and that whole creepy family but there just wasn't enough of it.
Does that make any sense at all?

it took me about 20 years to finally watch the original WICKER MAN and it was a treat. it's almost a satire horror musical that is actually about something, namely the conflict of old religions. pity it was butchered in the editing.
but la bute's version looks destined for camp greatness.
